Title: Fairing repair - ABS glue
Post by: 500rider on April 25, 2004, 07:49:44 AM
I had an idea a while ago while pondering a couple of my projects that I had on the go.  I was putting in a 240V electical supply in my garage so I can run a heater and welder and stuff and used ABS conduit for the project.  I was also working on fixing up my Katana fairing around the same time.  Through some internet research I learned that most fairings are ABS plastic.  For the conduit, you use this solvent "glue" that kind of melts the ABS and bonds it together.  I thought this might work on the fairing as well so I tried it.   Works great!  It seemed to bond it really well.  Just to make sure it was strong enough though I used some fiberglass and epoxy on the back.  The glue seemed to hold it really well though and sets quickly so the pieces don't have a chance to fall apart before the glue dries.

The piece I repaired was the tail section that I got from eBay and cracked in half during shipping (that's another story - for what I paid it was not worth the hassle to get my money back - I emailed the guy but got no reply - poor packaging was the culprit)

Anyway .. thought this may help someone.

For repairing abs plastics(among others), Fusor makes a glue/epoxy/? made for holding them together and flexing when needed.  The set times can vary from about 30 seconds and up, depending upon which product you buy.  It works great on the flexible bumpers on cars, but I don't know of anybody who has used it on a bike.

I used PVC glue on the fairings for my FZR and it worked great. Really cheap at the hardware store too.  :thumb:
