Title: terror on campus. WOO HA HA HA
Post by: ashman on May 02, 2004, 02:56:19 PM
Hey,
Just got back from a ride around campus. Decided to take a break from studying for finals. Best thing about the campus is the traffic circle in the middle of it, which demands serious some serious speed and leaning. Managed to hit a new personal best of 55mph and was doing some crazy leaning.  Metzler tires are nice, quite nice, Z2 and Z4 arnt 1/2 bad. I was tearing thru campus swereveing around the annoying speed bumps shattering the campus speed limit of 30 by more then 1/2  :)  One of those days where your just in the groove, the engine was stayin between 9k nd 11 the whole time. Good stuff. I think i know what it feels like to hit the max lean now. The bike started sliding a little, not outta control but i could feel it def. sliding.  Got out of there b 4 too long, afraid someone would call the cops. Must of gone around that circle 10+ times.    N E way, back to work...

I'm sure all the people were thrilled to hear you screaming around campus while they were trying to study    I'm sure glad I don't have to take exams this semester, being on co-op is such a nice break.  Then again, it's not like I studied to hard for any of them anyway :nono:

I'm cooped up in the campus library doin' the studying thing as well.  The weather is questionable here so I drove; no such diversions for me!

A guy was killed here two days ago while he was being an idiot like that on his CBR in a local business park.

Sorry not to pat you on the back for your accomplishment, but 55mph on a college campus is just stupid. I guess I can congratulate you on not killing yourself or anybody else though.  :thumb:

hey i said shattering it by MORE then 1/2. 30mph X 2 = 60+    I was doin 65 at most. Not 55, come on man i'm not "stupid" i'm recklessly insane :nana:  Get off my ass I'm just having fun on some empty campus backroads blowing off some steam.   i'm a fairly decent rider by the way i've ridden 7k or so since i got my bike 8 months ago. i've yet to whipe out or put a scratch on it or me. But thanks for assuming i'm a lil punk puttin people at danger.  :x I know what my bike can do and how it reacts.  But whatever  :dunno:  to each his own. To say shame to anyone whos taken a turn too fast or broken the speed limit on a bike it going to be condemning a whole lot of riders    I'd be willing to bet esp. on this board.

Hey... I'm usually one for advocating non-squidlyness, but Ash has the right idea for his ride... except for the above the speed limit thing through the streets.  I'd pay a lot for an empty traffic circle to practice leans on  :thumb: Going round and round like a maniac, trying to lean harder and get a good feel for the limits of the bike in a not so threatening environment.  UK bike mags suggest the roundabout thing :)

The poor guy is suffering through end-of-semester hell... and I say ripping around an empty roundabout is a good thing!

BTW, I've read stories about people wiping out at the Bear Mtn. circle here in NY... sportbikes ripping around a busy circle and every once in a while someone manages to lose it on the crappy pavement and slide beneath a guardrail or under a car  :o

me being the college student that i am, i have to agree with john.  campus is not the place for "spirited" riding.  go to the canyons, go to an old industrial park, go to some twisties.  doing it around campus invovles pedestrians, commuting cars, and other peopel who don't want to be involved with your antics.  i love hitting the twisties and messing around, but there is a time and a place, and while you may have had the right time (i just got off time a nice run mid finals today myself) you did pick an improper place.  if you realy wanna hit some speed and turns head to a track, don't take it out where you might mess someone else up.  and aside from that, campuses are known for suddenly stopping traffic, and people not looking while they're walking, so play it safe and pick a proper spot to have fun.  when i first got my bike i threw it around on campus, i said it was because there were good roads and whatnot, but in the back of my head i knew it was because i wanted people ot see me leaning way in and knee downing a corner.  don't be that guy.  i made a dumb mistake, there's no reason that you should do the same thing.  have your fun where you should, not where it makes you look cool.

damn it people, does any one know how to read? I said empty campus backroads! its a commuter school, so its dead on weekends. Plus there are a ton of empty roads that meander through the woods. I'm not talkin flying past the union doin 60, the union is closed, there isnt a traffic light on campus! That and I live in Mobile, AL go find me a canyon road and i'll ride it in a heart beat. And do you really think i'm that freakin stupid to go on a blind cornered traffic circle if there is going to be traffic on it!?! I dont have a death wish here. And now you say go to a industrial park and John says someone got killed being a idiot in one a few days ago. I'm doing it on a weekend cuz its empty so i dunno what "guy" that makes me. What "guy" are you being? Grrr, one simple post about how I had some fun now i'm being burnt by one and all. Sheesh, keepin my fun to myself from now on

Sorry Ash, it's just that I'm tired of reading about riders being killed is all. This most recent one around here was a 20 year old who wrapped his CBR around a telephone pole....didn't involve hitting anybody else. He lost it going around a corner...pushing his limits no doubt. The fact that it didn't involve anybody else doesn't make him any less dead.

Too many people think riding a motorcycle is like a video game...trouble is, if you screw up, or somebody else does...you stand a pretty good chance of dying, and you can't just hit the reset button and start over. It's an attitude you can see all the time, and there's no shortage of it on this board either I'm afraid.

Sure, it's great fun to have a spirited ride on a motorcycle....but there's a time and a place for it. Even if there's nobody else around (you think), pushing yourself to the point that your tires are sliding around on you on the street is just asking for trouble. If you're THAT close to the limit, the slightest little thing can land you on your ass...or worse. You should consider some track days instead, at least then you're in a controlled environment..with not as many obsticles to collide with if something does go wrong.

The safety aspect aside, doing what you did is a good way to piss people off. You said yourself "Got out of there b 4 too long, afraid someone would call the cops."  Well, if somebody did, or if it happens enough times(not necessarily just you) you can rest assured the cops will take it upon themselves to make life miserable for bikers.

It said in the paper about this guy who died the other day "police had received several complaints about a motorcyclist speeding and doing tricks around the time of the accident."  I'm sure he didn't go out with the intention of killing himself, he was just having fun and pushing his limits in his own private little video game. Well....he lost.

Sorry for taking an antagonistic view of your post, I just don't want to read about you, or anybody here killing themselves one of these days that's all.

Anyway, have fun...but be safe too.  :thumb:

Hell I don't care if someone dies, I just don't want the cops scoping me out like I'm an escaped con just because someone else was being stupid in public.

If they die, it's called Natural Selection.

If I get put under the spotlight because of them, however...it's called bullshit. :nana:  :guns:

I think you did fine ash. Who here doesn't exceed the speed limits? I do. No one was harmed. You took some calculated risks and had fun. That's what motorcycles are about. These bikes like to go fast.

QuoteHell I don't care if someone dies

I wonder if you'd say that if the somebody who died was your mother/sister/wife/girlfriend/son/daughter/whatever. Would you still call that natural selection?

That's one screwed-up attitude my friend.   :?
