Title: 2001 gs500
Post by: gomert43 on May 03, 2004, 06:48:46 PM
bought a new 2001 gs500, seems it is a blackhole year, having a problem finding much in accessories, ie exhaust, jet kits... is there much difference between years?  one year older and quite a bite more is available.

I ride an 01 and there are some key differences although alot of junk is the same.

Any year aftermarket exhaust will work- mine needed a longer bracket to attach the pipe to the rear foot peg (pipe was rubbing on the brake lever)

Jet kits are very specific- do a search and if you have any questions, email me.  Air filters are all the same.

Progressive springs will work in any year.

Differences- carbs, jets,gas tank,seat,plastic, brakes.

Let me know if you have any questions- I've done most of the "easy" mods.

Do it yourself-  Up the pilots from 17 to 20.  If you a running a full exhaust with a clamp  on filter- bump up the midmains from 60 (i believe) to 65 and the mains from 127 (I think) to 145 or so.  The pilot is mikuni bleed.  The jets are small round slotted mikunis.

If it's a slip on go to 62.5 mid and 135 or 137 on the main.

what kind of pipes did you decide on?  factory pro has a jet kit #cbr-s11-1-0 that will fit, sounds equivilent to a dyno jet stage 1, they are still
working on another one for more performance.

Just ordered a Vance and Hines, and I did order the same jet kit that you just said factory pro, and I already have a k & n filter.  Should be some good shaZam! when I get it all complete.

Speak for your own bike. They're not junk.

2001 and newer bikes got better/bigger/modern bodywork (tail and tank), bigger carbs, but otherwise is same from 2000 model. 1989, the first year,  had the most differences to the other years-clip on bars being the biggest difference. There were minor differences within the 1990-2000 model run, mostly happening around 1996 I think. This was different brakes and a few other minor mechanical diffferences.

There is LITTLE aftermarket for any gs500. Vance & Hines is only maker of full system right now and Cobra has 2 versions of slip-on mufflers for the gs500. Others are available used on this site or on ebay. Some ghetto rig together mufflers from other bikes but the overall effect is questionable.

I ride an 01; no problems with parts, easy mods so far:

Factory Pro jetkit (stage 1)
Cobra F1-R slip on exhaust
Progressive fork springs
15-tooth front cog
AV45/46 radials
Spitfire windscreen
magnets under frame

I never had a problem finding anything I needed online (filters, plugs, chain, cogs, etc)., just be sure to specify '01

Ghetto muffler isn't really ghetto, I do them a lot and they look just like the full system... Of course it does depend on the welder and your luck. BUt most muffler shops do a decent job. The effect isn't questionable either. It wont be as good as a full system on a bike that has had internal motor work, like head porting, flowing and higher compression pistons, but on a stock bike its just like a full system. Those exhaust ports are the biggest obstacles to flow. The pipe is just a small bump on its way out.
Cool.

if you had to rate the order and satisfaction of your improvements,  what would you advise.  For sure i will get jet kit and exhaust upgrades for the
mid range benifits, are you happy with the resuls\ts you got?
