Title: Help please help

I have an 89 gs500e that when i start it, it runs good for about 5-10 minutes, then floods out and dies.  I take the plugs out and clean the black suit and carbon off of them, and let it set for a while. then start it again and it will run fine for the same amount of time.  What do I do to fix it?  Does anyone have any clue?  Can someone please help?

Sounds to me like you're running super rich,or your choke is hanging up.  Has this been going on for awhile or did it begin suddenly?

that's a weird problem...

did you try not cleaning the spark plugs and other things....when it turns off, just let it sit for a little and then try to start it...if it starts then you don't need to clean the spark plugs...

hmmmmmm :dunno: maybe your engine is runing way too hot or something...or...damn, i don't know....sorry

OK you have fuel getting into the air box, that is a possible stuck float, sometimes a good ride will free them up... it did on my kawasaki's. The bumps are good for it evidently. Choke cable hanign like he said is also a possibility.

When one of my floats was stuck I had similar symptoms. Riding it didnt seem to jar it loose... but just knocking on the floatbowls was enough to free 'em up; worked like charm.  :dunno:

Is the choke on when the bike dies?  (Choke lever pulled back, towards you.)  Once the bike is hot (and 5 or 10 minutes will about do it), then having the choke on WILL flood the engine and it WILL die.  At least, mine does!

Now for MY questions:

1) Have you been running the bike for 5 or 10 minutes just sitting still (at idle), or does it die when you're running down the road?  Your answer may not change the diagnostic process, but it will tell use how urgent the problem is...!   :mrgreen:

2) How much fuel do you have in the tank?  Too little fuel would NOT explain the carbon on the plugs, but it might explain why the bike dies.  And the carbon could be the result of a separate, ongoing rich condition.

3) What kind of air filter do you have, and do you have any idea how many miles are on it?

4) Are the "Air/Fuel Mixture Screws" exposed?  (Are the brass plugs missing?)  If so, count the number of times they will turn before bottoming out, reset them, and tell us what the turn counts were.


5) Did you say that BOTH plugs have carbon on them?  If this is happening to only ONE plug, then you may only be running on one cylinder.  (Unlikely, but I thought I'd mention it.)

Here's what the Haynes manual says about carbon fouling:



So, here are some things to try:

A) Remove the air filter and see how well the engine runs.  Check the plugs afterwards.

B) When you push the choke lever all the way forward (OFF), make sure that the cable is fully retracted by checking the choke plunger at the other end of the cable.  It should look like the photos below, and should not be pushed any closer to the carbs:


Take your time, and come back with as much info as you can!

I had it running for a while but then it started backfiring in the left carb, so i took the carbs off and they are going to the shop in the morning to get them set back to factory specs.  I need the bike fixed because it is the only transportation I have and I dont have a manual to get it back to specs so I guess i have to do it the wiennie way and have a shop do it for me.  Unless someone can email me the directions from the manual on how to set it back to specs.   Once again thanks to everyone who replied to my posts,  You Guys Rock!!!!!

Kerry you are the man!  I was just skimming through the posts before hitting the sack and was amazed at the detail you went to on this...you helped more than one Gisser out again!

OK, I have a similar proble :( . I accidently left the bike on PRI and left it for about a 2 weeks (I know... Dumb of me :mrgreen: ). Anyway, the bike fired up just fine, but after 2 min idling died (choke was being disengaged gradualy).
So I thought, hey let's take her around the block. Keep the RPMs up and the gremlins might go away. I barrely made it back, she was diying.
I pulled the plugs, and they were Carbon fouled (Badly). I got a pair of new plugs and ran the bike. She fired right up, but again after 2min she started diying, this time I went for a nice 7 min ride and got her semi warmed up. Parked her just as she diyed again (lucky me).
So I pull the new plugs and find them partealy fouled up, but their tip was now the tan color I like. My gues is they got warm enough to start burning up some of the Carbon deposites.

After reading all of this, I will pull my air filter and run the bike (with clean plugs) The filter has about 3.5k on it.

If that doesn't work I'll try (for the 1st time) to clean the carbs... :o  :o  :?  :?  :dunno:  :dunno:  :o  :o

Any input would be cool. Thanks

Dsmirnov, check your oil for gasoline contamination!  I left mine on PRI overnight, and one of the floats was a little stuck.  It left a big puddle of gasoline on the floor.  After cleaning up the mess, I started it up, but it started to run rough once it warmed-up.  Later, I checked the oil, and the oil level had gotten higher overnight!  I drained the oil, and it was a smelly mix of oil and gasoline.

Now that I think of it... The bike smelled of gasoline when I took it for a ride...
