Title: Bike shop prices
Post by: LLrain710 on May 05, 2004, 11:22:02 AM
Hey,
Well my bike is out of commission right now.  Im pretty sure they problem is with the carbs, the bike sat for awhile before i bought it, it ran well for a while then would stall often and eventually was too much of a hassle to start, luckily it was then winter and i couldnt ride anyway.  Now the problem is spring is here and im really looking to start riding again.  I've looked into it, and im pretty sure i could get the carbs out and clean them myself, however i live on a busy uphill street with no garage.  Not really prime place to do any kind of bike work.  Im wondering what you think it would cost to get a shop to get my bike running well, mabye a tune up while its there?  I really just want to get her going as soon as possibly so im weighting my options.

Thanks
Luke

Tune up... well on a bike there is no tune up. Carb clean, carb synch, and valve adjustment. Not sure you need a synch, and even so eyeball is quite fine for that, carb clean, you can take it apart = you can do it. Valve adjustment, easier than carbs especially if you are checking them and not having to buy shims and adjust them. Quick = you do it yourself. Shops usually are waiting list people these days. Take 2-3 weeks for them to get to it.
Cool.

hey man, thanks for the quite reply
So is it really that easy to clean up the carbs.  I have a tool set, and cylmers manual, anything else really specific that i need??  What kind of solution should i use to clean the carbs, manual says not to ust carb cleaner cause it could damage plastic parts in the carbs?
i guess i'll try to tackle this myself, any addvice is appreciated.  Thanks

The manual says don't SOAK (dunk) the carb in carb cleaner.  You should still be okay using it, unless I'm horribly, horribly, wrong.

Just do not use carb cleaner on the floats...that is bad news.
