Title: EX-GS Hybrid?
Post by: Rollin668 on May 05, 2004, 03:12:45 PM
Anyone of you racers out there know of a GS500-EX500 Hybrid?  EX motor in a GS frame?  I know BRG Racing in NorCal built one, but after they built it, I can't seem to find how it worked out or any information about it.

Looking into building a "better mousetrap"... I've got a nice deal brewing on a stock GS with a bad motor for DIRT cheap... thought about the XR650, DR650, and Yamaha 660 motors, but I think the EX500 would be the best fit.

Seems "easy" enough... build a cradle for the EX motor that would have mounting points that line up with stock GS mounting points... the motor would be a solid mount.   Just install the motor with the cradle attached into the frame.  There seems to be enough room for the extra cooling equipment that the GS doesn't have...

Oh yeah - this would be a STREETBIKE... not planning on racing it, just terrorizing San Diego with it...

Thanks.

Rolly

Sounds like a good idea to me.  Of course I couldnt tell you anthing about the technical details.  Hey, I thought I read somewhere, at some point that somebody put a 2-stroke 250cc engine in a GS frame.  But dont quote me on that  :dunno:

Are the ex's 4 cylinders or are they twins too? cuz if they are I-4's they might be too wide, I dunno I've never looked at one up close before. I must say this idea is very intriguing, it shouldn't be too hard especially on our older-style bikes since most are still mechanically oriented versus comp controlled throttle, EFI etc.    I'm not sure if i'd be able to go without a bike for very long over the summer so it might have to be a quick fix.

Brian long raced that bike one year. If it ran, it kicked ass. But it kept breaking down so Brian gave up on it. The problem was the guy working on the bike, not the fact it was an EX motor.
The bike was sold to another guy that rode it a couple times last year. But I haven't seen him since.

It is doable. I think one of the biggest challenge was the shifter linkage.

Of course you have to get KAWAZUKI stickers for the gas tank

KC will be glad to give you some advice. Contact him at kc@brgracing.com

This is what he wrote to me when I sent him an email about the very same thing last year:

"It is not the easiest thing to do but it works very very well. The bike we work on are smoken fast with Brian long on it.  If you are a fabricator it should be pretty straight foreword. If not you may want to find some one that is. Brain is the one that started the hole thing. I just  helped a bit to get it finished and race ready. There was nothing that could touch it the year Brian was ridding it."

For a racebike it makes a GS semi-compeditive.  For a Streetbike, it an't worth it IMHO.
