Well the other day I got really bored so I decided to drill some holes in the baffle to make it sound louder. I started out with 4, then went to 8 then a few more, and finally I cut a big "O" around the inner tip and it sounds loud, and great!
Kinda reminds me of a V-twin down low, but once you press on it, sounds like an inline 4 when you get it up around 10k. Sounds similar to the Vance and Hines clip on here.
I was thinking of doing this myself, got any pictures?

hehehe lol...the only way our gs would sound like a I4 sportbike if we added 2 more cylinders and another 2 extra valves / cyl :thumb:

This is true but it prolly sounds better right ;)
Has anyone else done this?
HOW DO YOU DO IT?!??!?! :o
I want to do it too!!!
mine came w/ 4 extra holes drilled in the back. i like the sound, i dunno what stock is like for comparison. But around 4-5k its got a nice burble revin down. and has a nice sound all over.

I did a search for "baffle" and yeilded exactly what we need to know...
thank god tomorrow is Saturday. I'm all over it. :guns:
I only had it for two months, but I always thought that the quietness of the GS was one of its virtues. The bike that I picked up has a micron pipe just like the R6 I had and you can't hear a thing when its whining even with earplugs in.
I drilled 4 holes in mine today, sounds cooler.
weird thing is my tach stopped working after i did that. wtf (yes i know it's unreleated)
I did that with my GS, and another kid in town has an inlline 4 and when i'm driving around town people tell me they thought it was the kid with the inline 4, so it's made a big difference, sounds awesome!
Please guys, get a proper "performance" exhaust / muffler / can put on your pipes instead of drilling them out. Try e-bay and or save some $ and buy one. A louder pipe will only annoy other people and probably hurt your bike's performance. There are two components to exhaust performance:
1. The waves or pulses that assist in removing the old charge from the cylinders and packing the new one in. This action is designed into manufactured exhaust systems.
2. Freeing up a too restictive exhaust for better overall flow.
Drilling holes will assist in achieving #2, but will ruin #1.
This is probably the second easiest mod to do on the GS behind the fendeerectomy.
Takes less than 5 minutes to drill 5-8 holes in the back of the can.
I ended up getting a slip on anyways. I would also recommend a rejet, as mine(2002) back fires constanly now.
I started out with 4 then 8 then 10 then I finally drilled through the sides of each hole, and now it's a big ring around the inner tip. I thought by drilling all the way around the inner tip that i could remove it but it has some sort of inner mouting system, just drill as many as you can. everyone of my friends are like, DAAAAAAMN!!! so, no pics but i took an electric plug in style drill and a pointed bit and went at it. just remeber, if you dont want your bike to be loud, this is not for you.
does the number of holes affect sound?
and how bout the position of the hole?...in respect to the resonance?
bunch of cheap bastards!!, hehe  just kidding, to all his own

Yes the more holes you put in the louder it gets! It may not be the most correct way of making your bike sound a lot cooler, but it's by far the cheapest and less time consuming.
ok cool...thanks...
no jetting required right?

Nope, but not a bad idea regardless.
Ed_In_Az - If I had money for a proper performance exhaust, I be riding a more expensive bike! :)
hey ACE
can you take some pics soon?
That sounds cool. Do you have pictures, I might be interested in doing that.

I just did this mod last week, simply because I had nothing else to do friday afternoon, and i'm very happy with the results. I stopped at four holes, because that was loud enough for me (perhaps even a bit TOO loud for my tastes). The best part about this mod is that clean-up is a snap. Just switch on the engine, and let 'er rip! ....just make sure there's nothing behind the pipe that you don't want covered in metal shavings. :thumb:
anyone have pics of the actual pipe yet?
PICS REALLY ARENT NEEDED. the whole thing from start to finish took about 20-30 minutes. i will make a new topic titled, HOW TO: drill the baffle out. check it out.
My exhaust is gutted. I got nothing in it. Everything is stripped out. and I think it sounds awesome! loud as heck too. So what if there is a performance loss who cares, we didn't buy our bikes for the performance, at least I didn't. It's fast enough for me already.
I'll try and take some pics of it tomorrow!

i took a 3/8" drill bit, 3 holes at even intervals to outside baffel (spelling?),
and an almost 1/2 in puch to the inner baffel.has a harley'ish idle note to it, but once opened up, thing sounds evil :? , also ended up putting on k&n pod, and 140mains into her, along with 37.5 pilots (stock?), with 2.5 turns out on screws. runs like a raped ape  total cost, 43 for everything, :thumb: :dunno:
how the heck do you get the inner, small pipe out?
