First of all, you guys all rock. I've lurked and searched while looking for (and FINALLY buying!) my first bike, and I've been doing great in the archives until now.
I'm wondering what the best source (price and speed) of shims for valve adjustments.
Right now, I only know about Bikebandit.com and my local dealer as sources for OEM parts.
While waiting for my bank account to recover from the initial bike + protective gear purchase so that I can get the replacement chain and sprockets I need, I figured I'd do a good tune up. (Mental note: doing a tune-up when poor is a great way to spend even more money you don't have! <sad grin>) So far, reasonably so good but I found both left-hand cylinder valves to be below clearance spec. I can't fit my thinnest gauge (a 0.038mm) in between. Both valves on the right, on the other hand, are golden. At the advice of wiser folks on this board, I guess I'll buy one of the thinnest shims so that I can take the measurement and then buy the size I need.
The dealer says they don't stock the shims, so they'd be ordering them as well, and for some reason it takes them weeks to get Suzuki parts. I'm guessing a large online store might have 'em in stock? Anyway, I'm trying to get the first (thin) shim in a reasonable amount of time, since I'm still going to have to order (and wait) for the correct set.
Thanks in advance!
If you still can rotate the shim with too litle clearance in its bucket, there's no need to get the thin shim for measurement first. Next lower size will be alright.
