Woohoo, got my newly acquired 95 GS going!!!!
its not in riding condition as of yet, but soon!!!
I can't wait to ride my first street bike!!!!

I am very far from being a bike mechanic
I have a couple of questions:

First, when i give it gas it seems to take forever to wind back down to idle position. What do I need to adjust?

Second, when I give it gas slowly it revs no prob, when i go fast, there is a pop that i can hear and see coming out of those 2 lower holes in the left carb.

check to see if your choke is on. the cable might be stiff.

It takes forever for the throttle to move back or the idle just hangs??
If the idle is hanging and slowly coming back to normal  that usually indicates  a lean condition....

Sounds like your carbs may need need a cleaning- how long did the bike sit without being run?

It hangs after I turn the throttle and let go, then it finally goes back to idle.
The handle moves back to normal but the engine stays reved a bit,  I watched it closely on the carb and the levers go back when I let go of the throttle, so its something in the carb, maybe too much fuel, still flowing after I release the throttle?

I gave the carbs the ultimate cleaning last weekend, made sure the floats were all adjusted by using the diagram Kerry showed me.

in this pic I notice there is a hose connected to the top "T" on the carb, what hose goes there? I have the main fuel hose going to the bottom "T"

Or do I have them backwards? Maybe thats the problem

If I recall correctly from the Clymer manual, it's called a purge hose.  Mine goes off into space.  Then again, the configuration on my bike may have nothin' to do with how it's supposed to be connected.  :lol:   I just changed the primary and reserve hoses to their (correct) positions the other day after running out of gas.

The top T is atmospheric reference pressure. Normally a hose connects to it that runs over the airbox into the quiet space between airbox and battery. Having it not connected at all should not create a major problem.

Slow return to idle is often an idication of the carburetors drawing false air. Try spraying the intake ducts with a little brake cleaner. If that affects RPM, that's an indication that the stuff is sucked inside.

yeah, i'm having the same problem with my bike: let off the throttle and it takes a while to return to normal idle, sometimes even staying at the last lowest idle.  as in if i downshift and it idles down to 3500, when i push in the clutch, that's where it remains.  

i'm thinking that mine may need an adjustment with the mixture screw.  i messed around with it a little when i re-installed the carbs.

also, i ran some gas additive carb cleaner through it and that helped a little (it wasn't sticking as high on the rpm's), but i still have the prob.  i'll let you know if i make any progress.

Don't forget the valve adjustment.  I seem to remember a thread about an idle problem being corrected by a valve adjustment.

yup.  Don't know which thread you're referring to, but I had my idle hanging a *lot*, and valve adjustment fixed it (and lots of other problems) right up.

Hmm, I think I may give the valve adjsutment a go this weekend.
I will follow the instructions on the how to pages, it seems fairly simple.
any pointers would be great

Also, how do I adjust the mixture, aka Mixture screw, where is that located?

Yes, my bike also had the RPM hanging problem awhile back.  I tried to adjust the carbs and clean them but I don't think that was the culprit.  I adjusted the valves at the same time and recall that at least one was way off.  After adjusting, reassembling and everything the bike ran very well.

Awhile later I got an ignition advancer and that helped significantly too.

To get to the mixture screws you need to "drill out" (very carefully) the brass "plugs" like the one in the upper oval below:
