with a java chat or irc chat etc.. that would really help out with real time problems and solutions. what if you guys asked for one time donations or have a membership fee to use the chat. i know that there are people here who could moderate it to make sure it was bike related, clean chat etc...
yeah, you could find some of the more frequent members of the board to moderate. I'm always signed onto IRC, freenode.net, as "TaxilianLaptop"... if I were in a channel, even if I weren't actively listening (working, etc), someone could send a PM to me and I'd get it and investigate. Not that I'm volunteering for the job, of course. =]
it shouldn't cost anything to put in a chat to the page... you'd just need a java IRC client or something.
would be cool, hey richard, you could be the "chat whore  :nana:  :dunno: :?
i was thinking about this the other day. I was discussing my fork seals by PM and thought how much easier it would be if only it was irc syle chat.
All it'll take is a link to an irc server and room. Maybe something to look into.
alright. here is the deal.
server: irc.freenode.net
channel: #gstwin
I will be there anytime I'm online and at work. I use Trillian as my instant messaging program (http://www.trillian.cc) which in addition to connecting to MSN, ICQ, AIM, and Y! messenger services also connects to IRC, and thus I am able to be connected with no great inconvenience.
Any of the moderators or adminitrators on this site will be given op privileges, and if someone can convince me they are a good choice I'll set them as the alternate owner of the channel.
freenode servers seem to be pretty good most of the time.
If you don't know how to use IRC, here are some suggestions for (free) clients:
Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc)
mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/)
or for those of you too lazy to download something, probably the easiest is to use This Java-based web IRC client that I put up that connects directly to the channel (http://home.comcast.net/~rmbateman/irc/index.html)
After you connect, if you use the last one, please type "/nick <yournickname>" so we can tell who you are. =]
it be better to have a dedicated chat server tied to your board login name.
I thought about this before too. An old 3/S (3000GT and Stealth) messageboard had a chatroom setup on AIM. I dunno how they got it authorized but it definitely helped.
I'm downloading Trillian now. Thanks for the help Richard :thumb:
that might be better in some ways, yes... but with a little work (and John's cooperation) I could put the java IRC client to automatically log the client in using the board username, if that would help.
For me, I would not use a board chat room very often, whereas the irc one ties into my chat prog so I can use it as easily as anything else.
^ Bump ^ Bump
Can we revive this idea? Perhaps have a chat on the GStwin server and integrate it with the site?? :dunno: Kerry, Pablo, Good Guy? John? Anyone??
I can run a chat server.. its just a few clicks to my site.. give me a sec.
i setup one on my site but its not completely up.. i need to figure some things out.
