Title: Night time riding
Post by: Turkina on May 11, 2004, 11:25:03 PM
I went out to see Twilight Samurai at the movies (it was good!), and afterwards took a long ride around Long Island.  It was great to be out there with lots of green lights and no traffic.  I smelled some strange stuff inside my helmet... took me a while to realize it was the grass, trees, and flowers blooming in the springtime :)  I got back home after about 45 miles of riding, and I think the little detour home was definitely worth it!

I highly suggest everyone get out on the roads after midnight and do some riding :)  Pick some roads that you know well and don't have too many potholes and stuff.  The idea is not to go fast, but just go and enjoy the ride :)  Twisties work too, as long as you take it easy... Oh, and watch out for the drunk drivers!

I think I'm gonna be so happy I went and ordered my Sport Demons earlier today.  Those stock tires I have on my bike now are really foul :P I locked up the rear again on a short stop, and I doubt the tire even left a black streak.  It was like driving on a pat of butter  :x

Keep us posted on how you like the demons. I am planning to buy those as well, just want to put some more miles on the stockers first.

Night riding is great here too. when i get out of class i usually ride for about an hour before going home.  Practicing those leans on kelly drive!

I ride my gs every nite to work at midnite.  It's so great, not many on the road.  I do, however, get a lil more nervous about riding at nite on the weekends.  Many more drunks out on the road that may have an even harder time then normal seeing me.  On the way home in the morning I have some excellent back roads to take me all the way home.  I love my GS. :thumb:

yes. I definitely agree... riding through the city is much more peaceful at night...  its a much different atmosphere... i like it!!
BTW- Turkina, where are you getting your tires from?? And are you mounting yourself or shop? Still looking for a decent shop in the area.. how far are you from the city??

I think I'm going to get them mounted at a non-dealer shop in Port Jefferson.  I'm out in Suffolk, so that's not going to help you out :(  I ordered from Discount motorcycle tires and accessories (http://www.discountmotorcycletire.com/).  I've heard good and bad things, but they definitely have great prices, and the Pirellis I ordered aren't all over the web.  Paid 191 with shipping (about 170 for the tires).

Maybe check on one of the local boards (TSSB maybe) and you might be able to find a shop in the city that won't rip you off...

Oh yeah... what else did I see last night... A couple of sport bike riders pulled over by the police... You could see how unhappy the riders were even through their helmets.  Of course, the cop pulled away before I got there, and was trying to find some reason to pull me over as I rode behind him  :bs: Of course, I was cruising down a popular drag/stunting boulevard

And right before I got back home, I saw a red light a ways down the road, so I keep the bike in a high gear and sort of roll towards it.  And I ran out of gas.   The bike was geared high enough that it was spinning the engine and so I didn't notice the lack of juice since I wasn't trying to maintain speed.  I just had to switch to reserve once I figured out what had happened.  I thought I broke my bike!  :o

I just went out for ride last night from midnight to 4am with two friends.  The weather was perfect and there were no cars.  We took some twisties we knew well and stopped at a diner about 100 miles into the ride for a little wake up food. Nothing like being the only one on the roads!!
