Title: Neutral light problem
Post by: Rippa_MD on May 12, 2004, 10:53:10 AM
lately the Neutral light sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
just yesterday it worked. whent out for a second ride it didn't.

today I came from school and light didn't work! weird!
Is it a sign of something more serious happening? something electrical maybe?  :dunno: who knows, please help.

ps. when it does work is bright, I mean super bright. my tachometer and speedometer lights are out, don't ride much at night so haven't bother to replace the bulbs, but does that  effect others lights ? beats me????

I might be able to help on this one. Mine was doing the same thing for a week or two and then finally went out. I'd say just replace it and that should solve your problem. Do the speedo and tach while your at it, the bulbs only cost 40 cents or so a piece, not that hard of a job eaither. Or don't, my neutral and bright indicators are out. They tell you to never trust the neutral light anyway, and I can tell when my brights are on so thats not a problem. But once the oil light goes out I'll replace them, dont want that bulb to come on and not know it! :o

I'd say replace the bulb first before tackling any electrical troubles.  It is much cheaper and easier to try first. You may want to replace all the bulbs at once, while you are at it, makes life easier.  If that doesn't fix the problem you might want to check out the voltage regulator acting up.

Well, I guess this would have worked as well:

Agreed!

Remove the headlight, trace the nuetral wires to the harness inside the bucket and unplug it. Plug it back in and see if that helps. Intermitant electrical problems are almost always a connection, either power or ground. There could also be a chafe in the wires that allow them to ground out at times.

thanks for the advice.

It was a bad bulb or should I say bad bulbs. I busted out the Clymer manual then I changed speedo, tacho, and neutral bulbs. The Sylvania Model 194 bulb did the trick! I'll be doing more night driving now hehe.
