Title: Got caught in the rain.. What to check?????
Post by: dandaman96 on May 12, 2004, 08:57:21 PM
Hey all,
I'm new to the GS family and new to bikes in general.

I've been on my GS for about 2 weeks now, and tonight, coming home from work, I got caught out in a hell-of-a rain storm.  Well, after a nice, slow, soaking ride home, I have some questions about teh consequences on the bike.

Every part of this bike got hosed w/ water.  Is there anything I need to check.  Chain lube (what is acceptable?), water in the gas, anything else???  Any input is appreciated.

Sooner or later (more sooner than later) I need to sit down and read the maintanence manual for this bike, until then, I look to you guys for help.

Thanks!!!

Dan

When it gets dry just re-lube the chain and you should be all set.

Down here in florida it rains, ALOT! and well I haven't had a cover on my bike in at least a year, and I have ridden at 50+ on the highway in a downpour (stupid I know),  and I haven't had any problems with anything getting wet.

Its a well built machine.

Thanks man.

And I love the signature (I have a t-shirt w/ the same saying on the back!).  The things engineers find funny...

As far as water-in-the-gas ...

... you shouldn't have a problem.  The engineers designed for this eventuality:

How does the rain water / extra fuel GET to the hose attached to the bottom of the fuel tank?  Down this tube:

(Hope the pictures aren't as dark on your screen as they are on mine!)

Well, you could have soaked your air filter, but since the bike is running, you don't have to worry about that :)  Only people with pod filters need to be concerned, and only sometimes.  Do check the chain for proper lubrication.

We've had K&N pod filters on Lita's GS for years and never had a problem with it getting wet even after riding several times in really heavy rain.

Yeah, what JamesG said... Only if you like riding through puddles ;)
For the most part, a little water isn't going to hurt the engine any... But with the pod filter and lots of rain, do you need to make sure the filter is oiled after all that rain?  I have a K&N in the airbox.
