So my dumb ass friend backed over my GS with his truck qa couple hours ago. How do you all think I should get it fixed? Insurance or what?
He dented the tank, dented exhaust, and wrecked rear bodywork. Oh yah, bent the bar, and brake clutch lever.
I need ALOT of parts obviously!
2002 blue GS if any of you have the parts Im looking for.
How much does this suck?
Tank is 500-600 new or about 200-300 used.
Exhause will be about 200
Body work is about 200 I think for a rear maybe less
Bar get srinaths for 50 bucks
and a clutch lever you can get for about 25 bucks on ebay they got those nifty fake carbon fiber ones that are adjustable.
All in all for that money... I would go the insurance route. It wasn't moving, you weren't on it. By their industry policy they can't increase your insurance rates.
Sorry to hear about that.
Just remember Rich, put the body in a bath tub, and THEN add the lime. No evidence that way and a really clean tub in about 4 weeks. :)
HIS insurance or HIS pocket either way. If he's a good friend he'll pony up the cash and have it fixed. I'd suggest NOT taking the cash and fixing it yourself because you might run into other problems then have to go back to him for more money. Take it to a shop and have them fix it on his dime.

You would think a wood chipper would be a good way to dispose of the remains, but it leaves messy DNA evidence all over the place. For the tub, you might want to try the classic 'cleaner' approach and get some industrial grade sulfuric acid to dissolve the body parts. Will make your tub drain all shiny and new! No clogs! Make sure you wear proper protective equipment! Too bad you're not near the ocean, some concrete shoes will help him get fed to the fishes ;)
If you don't mind getting caught (hey, jail will keep you fed, clothed and housed for years!) I recommend borrowing his truck and going Achillies on him. Tie him to the trailer hitch by his ankles and drag him around the city limits a few times :thumb:
Feed him to the pigs, a la 'Snatch'? :dunno:

Damn that does really suck.
Unless you really REALLY trust him and know he's a stand up guy, I would insist of going thru his insurance. I know of several "friends" who have had their lent bikes crashed and the crashie has promised to pay/make good the repairs. Much foot dragging usually occurs, and months~years go by before things get right if at all. The friendship is usually terminated by then.
Don't hesitate. TODAY either contact your insurance Co with HIS insurance info, or get the bike down to the dealer for an apprasal. Get the sticker shock out of the way and see if he still wants to pony up for the repairs (I doubt he will, its going to be about $1000).
My advice is to go through his insurance. Any other way could lead to problems. The bike will probably be totaled and you can get another bike. Lord knows if the frame is bent.
I believe in the path of least resistance and going through his insurance is the least personal and the best way to guarantee your friendship stays in tact. Because it's between you and the insurance, not you vs. him.
I think I would let the insurer's sort it, non personal and all that. As for the much more interesting dillema, pigs will eat everything without trace or dismember and shove through a wood chipper, then feed the fish. My son is a tree guy and has a gigantic chipper for hire. Given your geography, any chance a polar bear might eat him?
I hope it all works out OK.
Thanks for all the advice guys. I think his insurance is the way to go. He hit it pretty hard, so the frame may very well be bent as mentioned. The dent in the tank is about the size of a small pancake. Its VERY deep though. When I went to start it this morning, it would have no part in it. Just sputtered and bitched. Finally after a hearty downhill pushstart, I got it to run. I rode it home. It felt a little funky. It was kind of messed up. I put on an old drag bar I had, because the other bar was so badly messed up. Srinath is definatley getting an order. One thing I didnt notice untill this morning was the exhaust can. I knew it was dented, but I didnt notice that when he hit it, the welds on the bottom popped out, or at least a few of them did.
The guy who did it is a good friend, but he has a really BAD history with shaZam! like this. I thinks its karma coming back to get him now.
As for body disposal, Polar bears are out of the question. They are 4000km north. Pigs...well there are some pig farms southeast of the city. Wood chippers, well definatley cool. I think Im going to go the more extravagent route. Im thinking strap a Napom (sp?) cannister to his body, and launch it into the desert north of the city with a trebuche (sp?). That would be sweet!
Ooh ooh good idea!
Maybe if the frame is bent and they decide to write it off, I can spend the money I will get on another SV! Perhaps an SV1000, and then the 650 can be the track bike. That would be cool hey? Or perhaps the insurance money will just go straight to buying a Pathfinder or Grand Cherokee. Practicality may win out after all. Damn Canadian winters.
dang, dude. that stinks. I'd let your friend decide how to pay for it... but he should pay for it. Would think Liability on the truck would cover the damage (though I don't know if things work the same in Canada as here in the US), or if he wants to put up the cash.
If he is just going to have his insurance pay, take to a shop to get a full estimate for the insurance and then take the money and fix it yourself... you'll end up with some extra cash on hand, though if it's your friend he might be offended by that, so your call there. =]
Hope you get it fixed! keep us posted!
I bet he's feelin pretty bad. So make sure you tell all of your mutual friends. Go out and make him buy you beer. Then he takes your bike to the shop.
:)
I thought Id update the final cost on repairs for my GS for anyone who is interested. Its came out to $3312.00 for all the labour, and parts needed. There was some considerable hidden damage done to it.
At least the girl who is doing the estimate and all the ordering for me is really gorgous, and Im scoring a date with her.
So, my GS has a resale of $4500, and the repairs are 2/3 of that. Maybe I will be getting a new bike after all. Or perhaps my Pathfinder.

Damn Rich, sucks to be you buddy. Sorry to hear it. So what are you saying? Insurance fraud can be a beatiful thing (like homicide), if done correctly

/\---Insurance fraud is somewhat amusing.
Can you believe repairs on a GS could amount to that? I had no idea! I cant wait to see the look on my friends face when he hears the estimate! It will be classic.
How about you when the insurance company tells you they're gonna have to "total" the bike, and that if you want to keep it you'll have to buy it back at a "salvage" price, and then fix what you can with the remaining money?
At least, that's what happened to me when I rammed that cow. Does bike insurance in Canada work the same way?
Kerry did you atleast get steaks for a month too?
Naw, the folks that stopped at the scene couldn't even positively identify which cow I hit - she had run off and joined the herd. (I was on my back with 2 compressed vertebrae, so I didn't even get to look for her....)
She apparently came through the experience a lot better off than I did. Tough lady, that!
