I was wondering what the stock tire life is? I have 1800 miles on my bike now (bought it in Jan with 900 on it). It is a 2000 with the original tires. I have read that tires get hard and useless by just sitting around, and also hear that the stock tires are crap anyway.
I want to replace them, but like most of you here, I am way too cheap to take a set off with good mileage left in them. So how much longer you think it will take to to scrub the rest of the rubber off? I do ride somewhat aggressively in the mountains, where there are many twists and turns.
I am thinking of going withe the Avon 45/46 combo once I need to replace them.
Any thoughts?
Andy
I got 9,000 + on my rear. Should have replaced at 7,000. It looses its
round shape at that point and gets kind of hairy in the turns.
My front lasted 15,000+. Still good but had to change the back so I put on both.
Tires are cheaper than parts and hospital bills...
I will be lucky to get 300 miles out of my BT090 front!
Andy...if you want to scuff off the rest of the rubber, I am going to be riding this coming Sunday 5/23. Probably heading towards NC meeting up with a Charlotte area group.
I use Bridgestone BT45's and find them to last for ages, I got 12,000 Miles from my rear and 15,000 from my front!
the consensus on GS-500.DE is that the BT-45 is THE tire to use on the GS.

Tire life can vary a lot depending how the tires are used. My OEM tires on the 97 GS went about 8k miles and then a replacement BT45 rear went about 9k+ miles. I then put a couple rear touring tires on the 97 that lasted much longer than either bias tire. Returning to a rear BT45 a couple years later, my much more aggresive riding wore it half way by actual tread depth measure in less than 2k miles. I then put on a MEZ2 radial rear that lasted 14k miles and it was used even harder than the 2nd BT45.
I'm running the AV45/46's on the 02 GS now. My tire logs:

hey jack...
how do you like the Avons so far?
gsJack,
Did you ever post a review of the Avon 45/46's? I must have missed it if you did. If you didnt, how about giving us your thoughts on those tires, I hear good things regarding them, but always for other bikes.
Thanks
Andy
Frost and akh223:
Sorry, I just saw your posts. I put the AV45/46 tires on less than a month ago and have only put a little over 1k miles on them so far. We have been having a lot more than normal rain this spring so I can already say they are the best tires I've had in the wet so far. :thumb: Better than the Z4/Z2 combo which were considerably better than the bias tires in the wet in my opinion.
Haven't had a chance to push them real hard in the dry yet, but will let you know what I really think of them after next months trip to the Smoky Mtns. Hopefully most of that week long trip will be on dry roads. So far though I am real happy with them. Besides feeling very good gripwise, they have a nicer ride than previous tires have had on my GS's. I put the 110/80 on the front and it softens the front Progressive springs a bit making for a better ride along with still good handling. I consider my 02 GS to be more a sport-touring bike than a sport bike, but I still like to be able to do the mountain twisties in a spirited manner once I get there.
hey guys
i'm riding the last mm of thread off the bt-45 that i have now, before i had the stock exedra's and i hated them. i like bt-45 but still i'm looking for better tires i have a choise:
110/70-17 M/C 54H TL SPORT DEMON K Front
130/70-17 M/C 62H TL Sport Demon K
OR
bt-090
110/70-17 front
140/70-17 rear
now i made a couple miles on the bt090 on another gs but it had a bit different steering so i guess there's also a difference there, but i liked the ride
so what are your expierences on these 2? the grip in dry/wet (especieally wet (holland...) but dry because i like making fast corners and sometimes make rides in the hills (in germany - eifel area)
what about durabilty and price?
or should i stick to bt-45?
thx
I don't have much experience with Sport Demons on wet but I can tell you that in dry they work great. They stick pretty well, they're even usable on the track.
It's been raining heavily here lately. I could have tested them on wet but my carbs are in need of spare parts, so the bike sits in the carage. :(
so they're both good on dry, anybody know waht's more durable-expencive?
Do a search on the type names. Plenty of material.
Comparison of BT-45 and BT-090 here (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=44189&highlight=bt090#44189).
And an interesting statement by dgyver:I'll be lucky if I get 300 miles out of my BT090 front  (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=74432&highlight=bt090#74432)
hey thx. my bad i didn't use the search i'm a lazy bastard
i see the bt090 is going to wear much faster but i don't really mind, now I only have to see what's chaper bridgestone or pirelli
Just looking for some where to dump this info.
On my 2005, with its original Bridgestone BT-45 tyres I got:
13,500 kilometres on my rear tyre
25,300 kilometres on my front tyre
I replaced my stock rear tyre with another BT-45 just before an outback trip (95% straight roads) and managed to get:
11,800 kilometres from the rear tyre but it was in pretty bad shape http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=39450.0
