so the other day i was riding around and noticed that a funny grating noise was coming from the bike. even with no throttle it seems to make the noise. my bike does need new sprokets and chain. you guys think that this could be the cause of the noise

Probably. Is the chain very slack? if so, it can grate on the swing arm or the centerstand.
