Title: Chain adjuster sticking
Post by: jlamont on May 18, 2004, 01:33:37 AM
The chain adjuster on the right hand side of the bike appears to be stuck fast.  Once the axle nut is loose I can adjust the left but the right hand side indicator plate is stck fast against the arm.  I've tried freeing the axle bar with a mallet but it doesn't appear to be moving.  Admittedly I wasn't sure how much force to apply as I was afraid of doing more harm than good.

Has anyone else come across this problem.

AgainI had the same thing. In my case however, a few blows with a mallet took care of the problem. If you have everything rotted fast, I'd try to take out the rear wheel, just to get an Idea how bad the situation is.

And apply the second rule of redneck mechanics:

"If it doesn't move, and should, use WD-40!"

If you look at the oval hole on the right side of the swingarm, is there room for the axle to move forward?

If so, you might try this:carefully!) kick the tire to move the axle forward.  You indicated that you're a "hefty" guy, so don't get carried away and kick the bike off the centerstand!  You may want to have the front tire up against a wall, or get a friend to help.[/list:u]Theoretically, if you're able to move the axle forward you will simultaneously pop the adjuster plate free and move it back on the threaded adjuster rod.

Good Luck!
