Post by: The Buddha on May 19, 2004, 09:02:26 AM
So Is anyone else going to keep the GS forever... If it wears out... rebuild it and ride it till it wears out again... and repeat ... I know I am... But anyone else???
Cool.

That's the current plan, but we'll see how I feel about it after the FIRST rebuild.

not I - intentions are to have this bike till prime bike-selling time next spring, then upgrade to an SV or equivilant.

I'm with Kerry!  The only thing taht may cause a sell is if the $$ is needed to get a different bike down the road.  As of now I'm keeping the GS as my daily ride (not counting my cage which doesn't get many miles these days) through this summer and start looking at different bikes this winter.

I'm planning on keeping mine until it wears out, which hopefully won't be for a really long time. I doubt if I'd rebuild it, though.

I'm keeping one as a track/race bike.

I'm keeping it for as long as it will run.  I won't re-build.  Life is too short.
Just get another one.  My 9 year old will need a street bike one of these days.  They grow up so quickly.

that reminds me also - i'm gonna try to ditch my bike onto some of my friends that want to ride. i could convince them so much mroe to buy a bike from me and learn to ride than to go out and get their own bike.

As long as I have a house with a decent, clean garage and some good space that will not be disturbed, I'll do my own rebuild.

My previous bike was a GS400X that I bought new in 1978, and rode until last October. Total miles-about 25,000. It was a great bike. I had to replace the seat because the seat frame rusted out (It stayed outside, uncovered, elmost every year.) I replaced tires, brakes (drum brakes front and back), sprockets and chains, and had the tank welded to stop a leak. Virually nothing else major happened, except that it developed a little oil leak around the head gasket on one side. I bought the gasket but never bothered to switch them. When I sold the bike for $250 a couple of months ago, I gave the buyer my old shop manual (Clymer) along with the head gasket.

The old 400 and the GS500 are almost identical in engine specs except for the displacement. When I found out how similar the bikes were, I snapped up a 2001 in January for $2600. This is the bike that's getting over 70 mpg. I don't need anything else. I'm absolutely sure I will be keeping this bike until one of us augers in. I did buy a nice plastic tarp that keeps it dry.

When and if I ever have the $$$ for a new bike, I'd have to sell it, I just don't need 2 bikes.  Unless my fiance shows interest in riding it, it's gone.

I'd love keeping the GS around and make it spiffy.  I don't think it would be my daily bike though... I want to get something new next year, that I don't have to take a wrench to that often.

Possibly next year, I'll 'sell' my GS to a friend with the option to be the first to buy it back.  That'll give me money to buy a new bike while my friend learns to ride on the GS.  And in a couple years, hopefully I'll have saved enough to buy the GS back :)

I'd like to make my GS into a shiny, well kept bike for those days when I don't want too much power... or convert it into a track bike if I decide to go that way.  Either or, I'd like to keep it around, since working on it is a lot of fun! :)

At one point I was in the marke for a '03 SV650s. After sticking so much into my bike last winter It wouldn;t be right to sell it. Plus I now I don't want to. So, yeah I will have mine for along time i think.

i would like to keep it forever but i don't think that i'll be able to....money is tight and if i decide to buy a bigger bike, i will be forced to sell my GS500....if i don't have problems with money, the gs will be here with me :D

I'll keep it.  It doesn't eat anything.
