Title: how to clean a foam filter, any ideas?

local mechanic suggested very hot soapy water

i know there is cleaning stuff out there

any other ideas?

Warm water + dishwashing liquid...
Works great on chain, wheels, engine cases and whole bike in general. Just keep it away from prolinged contact with steel.

I have used Simple Green mixed with hot water.  Simple green is a very good de-greaser.  Just don't use gasoline or kerosene.  It will make the foam break down much faster than it would otherwise.  There are also commercially available sprays for thsi purpose, but I found the Simple Green to work just as well and be much cheaper.
