alright heres my deal, i got this gs 500 about a month ago, great condition blah blha blah... but when i leave it still for over a week and then mve it, it starts to leak gas from those 3 tubes on the right side of the bike??
is this a problem is it not?
ps- the gas postion is on ON not pri res or watever
gracias
Your carbs overflow into the airbox. For this to happen two problems must be present:
The petcock doesn't close, even if there is no vacuum from the carbs.
The float needle valve does not close properly.
I'd check the first condition by pulling off the hose that feeds the carbs (lower T) anddraining it into a can. If there is a constant drip, your petcock does not seal.
The second problem calls for a general carb cleaning and inspection of the valve needle and float.
what happens if i just leave it alone/.... im to lazy to bring it to a shop
well, if you don't want to take it to a shop (I wouldn't) there are two options:
A. fix it yourself,
B. deal with consequences.
in this case, fixing it yourself might not be difficult at all. if the petcock is bad, you just need a new one... either stock or maybe there are some aftermarket options, not certain if there are for that petcock or just for the main (in the fuel tank) one. If it's the floats, adjusting the float height is kind a pain, but not horribly difficult, as repairs go.
Dealing with it, well, best case scenario (petcock) you probably just lose some gas. if it's the floats/needle, your carbs might not work correctly and your bike might not run right.
Make sure you check that the petcock is set to ON or RES, not PRI. sometimes that'll just happen in PRI (all the way up on the '89-00 models, pointing back on the '01> models)
i dunno ill do it later... if my bike seems likt its not runnoing well this weekned ill take it the shop, but whats the worst tht can happen if i just leave it alone for anothe 2000 miles?
The worst that can happen is that you blow up and incinerate the house where the bike stands.
The second worst, that the fuel decides next time that it rather flow off into the engine and you get hydrolock. For the results, do a search on "hydrolock" here onthe forum.
my god im so scared now... i dunno wanna pay alot of money on my bike anymore... if this is simple to fix my self can someone help me... or reasure me it will be ok for a 100 more miles or so
I had the same problem. Look what I found out (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9032) and then decide whether you want to risk it.
Actually, I still have that problem 'cause spare parts haven't arrived still. :x
so do u think ill be ok for a coup,e hundred miles... i dont think its tht big of a deal my bike sounds perfectly normal
It can also, instead of hydro locking it can run into the oil and thin it out causing head damage. A leaking petcock and needle valve is a rather inexpensive fix compared to the possible outcomes. Just fix it man
so will someone help me explain how to fix itz!!!!
Well first, you need to adress the petcock issue. More than likely the diaghraminside has rotted and is leaking, or the spring is coroded and not pushing the diaphram back. You need to see about removing the petcock and diasasembling it, to see what you need. If the inside is HIGHLY coroded, I recomend replacing the whole petcock.
Next for the carbs, you will need to remove the carbs. Then on the bottom there will be I believe 4 screws that holod the bowl on. You will remove them and expose the float. attached to the float is the float needle.
Remove the flaot pivot pin to be able to remove the needle. Check the tip of the needle for ANY wear (will apear as if theere is a circle around the tapered tip of it. It should be a perfect cone shape)
Next look into where that needle went. clean out any debris from in this area (it is called the seat) using a bit of 0000 steel wool. Shove the steal wool in and spin it with a screw driver gently. Dont use to much pressure, you dont want to change the size of the orifice. You should be able to reasemble, and be good. You can test the neelde andseat somewhat by hooking up the fuel line with the bowl still off, and gently lifting the float and see if this stops the fuel flow.
Let me know if ya need any more help.
PS I am new to the site, but I am a shop mechanic :thumb:
As an add-on to Motojoe_23's post....
The silvery part in the photo below is the float needle. The rubbery tip should be clean and without any gouges or worn areas.
The brass part is the valve seat. The needle fits up inside the seat and blocks up the small hole on the upper end (which you can't see here).

does neone know whwre i can get a new petcock?
i might just bring it to a shop in a couple of weeks and say fix!!
Don't shop for a new petcock yet. Even if the petcock is allowing fuel to the carbs when it's not supposed to (which is not proven yet), fuel will NOT overflow from your carbs unless the float needle is stuck open and letting the fuel into the float bowls. But we haven't even proven that your carbs are overflowing. So far that's only a guess.
Let's start over, OK?
Quote from: i3randon12when i leave it still for over a week and then mve it, it starts to leak gas from those 3 tubes on the right side of the bike
1st Question: HOW MUCH liquid comes out of the tube(s)?
You imply that fuel doesn't come out of the hoses until you move the bike. Seems to me that if your float needles were stuck open you would find a good-sized puddle of fuel on the floor/ground before ever moving the bike.
2nd Question: WHICH tube/hose does the liquid come out of?
* One of the 3 tubes is smaller than the others. That's the battery vent hose, and it has nothing to do with your fuel system.
* One (or both) of the other hoses has a "cap" on the end. It looks like there is no outlet, but if you fiddle with it you will see that there is a slit in the "cap" that will allow fluid to leak out when there is a sufficient amount. Both of these hoses appear in the following diagram.

Any fluid that comes out of the "Fuel Overflow / Water Drain Hose" has gathered underneath the fuel filler cap on top of the fuel tank...

...and drained through a metal tube that runs through the inside of the fuel tank (centered in the picture)...

... and then through the hose depicted in the diagram above.
Only if the fuel is coming from the "Airbox Drain Hose" do you have anything to (MAYBE) worry about. Even then, there are at least 2 ways for fluids to get into the airbox:
1) The carbs overflow with fuel because of stuck floats. This is the original "guess". But like I said, this should result in a good-sized puddle, assuming that your fuel tank has very much fuel in it.
2) "Blow-by" from the crankcase is injected through the hose that connects the valve cover to the top front of the airbox. (Not depicted in the diagram.) Some blow-by is normal, and can include both oil and fuel.
This leads to my...
...3rd Question: WHAT is the liquid that comes out of the tube? Are you sure it's pure fuel? Could it be a mixture of fuel and oil, and maybe even water?
================================
Take your time, don't panic. Digest this info at your leisure, and let us know the answers to the 3 questions above.
K? :)

Damn that was a kick ass reply :thumb:
I jsut assumed he would know that it is fuel.... if you are not sure, or it smells like it MIGHT be fuel, take a cup of water and pour it on the puddle of fluid that comes out, if it is fuel you will see it bubble up in the water and separate.
And like he said, if it was the needle and seat it would leak alot, and all the time pretty much
thnk u kerry! u made my day
1st answer- very little amount maybe 3 drops or so
2nd answer- one of the tubes with some CAP on it
3rd answer- my guess water plus fuel, or maybe just fuel
perosnally i cant awnser the 3rd question, dont have a good nose
the dripping doesnt happen all the time maybe 2ce a month, i move my bike almost 4 times a week most of the time nothing
again nice pics
VERDICT: You have nothing to worry about.
:) RIDE HAPPY! :)
omg whoohoo thanks for the great news kerry... screw all the rest of u who got me so worried!! :guns: die!!!!!!!!!
 haha no im just kidding, i didnt explain as much as maybe i shouldve
im going to go celebrate!!!
