Title: Dirtbike handlebars on a GS500????
Post by: gs500fromnb on May 21, 2004, 05:08:31 PM
Well since I went down last weekend I need a new handlebar... Suzuki is backordered and im in for another couple of weeks wait. The bike is my commuter. I just bought a "tag metals" dirt bike handlebar.

It looks to be exactly the same size as the stock one exept being a wider grip... another thing is that the bar ends will not fit at all... any suggestions?

yeah, they're 7/8th.
I have dirtbike bars on my GS right now.
I put em on last summer just for the hell of it and never took em' off.

They are wider than stocks, but they give a comfy riding position.   I'll probably take them off and put my drag bars back on sometime this summer.

In my opinion it gives the bike a more streetfighterish look, but in my case it makes the bike look more like a rat bike because the bars are kinda scratched up and my seat is shot.

OK aluminum bars have to be thicker than steel... most dirt bik bars that I have seen are aluminum... so being thick like 1/8 wall... no more bar ends.
Cool.

I put down my bike last week, as well.  Today I was looking at the dirt bike bars and wondered about the bar ends.....

So have ridden the bike with the new handlebars?  Is there extra  vibration?

I'm planning on making my way up to Grand Canyon next weekend, and would rather take my current bent handlebars than buzzy new ones.

HERE'S THE SCOOP:

Got it done... you need to drill two holes where the throttle  and the other side where the choke is... those two pieces have a little plastic thing that goes into a hole it the bar (I drilled with a 13/64 bit I think).

I cut the handle bars to be the same width, so that I could put everything roughly in the same place as the other's where (so I didnt have to reroute cables).

I modded my bar ends to fit it... just bought a new bolt, nuts without the skirt, and put the rubber on a drill and made it spin to shave it to fit in the dirt bike bar.

THe bar I got was a TAG Metals bar, around 100$ compared to the 70$ stock one (canadian dollars here.. lol).. it was really alot thicker than the stock... but everything else fits.

It rides GREAT... a bit wider grip, but more agressive. NO vibrations at all. It does take a bit of getting used to but other than that I think it looks better and works better too.

I have dirtbike bars on my gs.  you don't actually need to cut them.  all the cables will work just fine.  but I'm sure it didn't hurt.  and I just went without bar ends, but left about 3/8th of an inch of the gold annodized alluminum bar sticking out of either end of the grips.  looks pretty cool.
