Title: OT: Anyone have millions of cicadas yet?
Post by: Anonymous on May 22, 2004, 02:57:39 PM
I want my wife to see/hear them.  I was about 12 and living in NJ when I saw them last and it was truly amazing.  Messy, but awesome at the same time.  So, any of you infested yet?

I hear em screeching in the woods and see a few on the trees.
I heard it takes about 7-10 days before they start flying, its gonna be crazy when they start flying around

Not too many by my house.  I rode from Bloomington to Story Indiana today and once you get out in the country they must be pretty thick.  I was riding along at 55-60 mph and could still hear the damn things over the engine and wind noise.  I thought that there was buzzing on my bike, but when I stopped in Story to eat breakfast I discoverd that it was just the cicadas.  The damn things could atleast all pick the same pitch to screech.  The disonance really bothers me and would drive me crazy if i had to listen to it for more than a short period.

Just wait!  It was over 30 years ago when I witnessed the cicadas in NJ.  It was like nothing I've ever seen except anyone who's lived in Hawaii for the New Years fireworks.  They will be EVERYWHERE and the sound will surround you like an alien invasion.  I'm just glad I won't have to clean up after them.

No cicadas in Western KY yet, at least not at my place. I think they are coming soon though. I have heard them before, and the sound is loud.

:o That second pic is enough to make my skin crawl.  I thought having the occasional scorpion was bad but I think I'm gonna go find one and shake his hand for not having 80000000000000000000 brothers.

I love the sound and look of Cicadas. They are 100% harmless to people and plants and everything else. They come out of the ground for one thing only, SEX. :)  The ultimate party, gett'in together with a few million of your best buds and screw'in 'till you die. As a kid I loved to play with them. Just pick them up and stick them to your friend's shirt, the live ones and the empty shells.

You definately want to wear your helmet when these guys and gals are around. Hit one of those big fatties at 60 mph and it hurts. When they hit your helmet it sounds like a rock stike. :o

Here in Arizona we get cicadas most every year, just not in mass quantities. This year however, either they aren't out yet, or they've moved back east for the party.

Keep seeing (and hearing!) more every day here in Maryland...

Any fishermen out there be sure to try them as bait!

The bass were going crazy for them at the lake Saturday.

PS

They make a hell of a mess on the visor when you hit them at speed.
