Title: Anyone has a helmet with superior ventilation?
Post by: chuey on May 22, 2004, 05:54:52 PM
I got stuck in traffic on the highway today and there were parts of the road that were too narrow to lane split, I was sweating my noggin off, I wanted to ask if people on this board have an XVent or other type of hi flow full face helmet and what they think of it? I won't wear anything that isn't full face by the way or that doesn't meet or exceed DOT and Snell minimums. So skid lids aren't an option. Opinions would be greatly appreciated and I can't afford anything that's greatly more than 300 bucks.

Wear glasses and you can flip-up the face shield when stopped or really low speed (although a hornet in your helmet at 1mph can still cause a crash or collission).  A flip-up would help there too.  I flip my shield open at stoplights.

I agree about full face only. Still, this one has 'perfect' face ventilation.  Didn't do much for you in a crash though. And no need looking for the DOT sticker.  There isn't one.

This was how helmets were styled until about 1956 or so.  I think they were called "puddin' bowl" helmets.  - For your puddin'

I have an HJC CL-14 that's crazy vented, at least compared to my last helmet.  First time out, I opened all the vents (as that's what I'd done on the previous).  About a mile out, decided that I should probably close a few.

Wind tunnels are cool, but it's nice to have a bit of a break from the wind INSIDE your helmet. :thumb:

It was about half of your budget, from newenough.com (who I highly recommend.)

$450 for a solid color
$537 for graphics

Thanks, I was hoping to hear about the Xvent though. That or the VR1 I'm really looking into these two helmets. I've tried the RX7 helmet from Arai and the large just fits absolutely perfectly, I just don't know if I want to shed 350-400 for a helmet. I'm really tempted but...the VR1 isn't super venting but the racer helmet just looks awesome and its only about 180 shipped.

I had a CL-14, and it bit compared to my new Shoei RF1000.  What a helmet, with superb vents that will chill your skull to the point that you have to adjust them down.  Really, its worth every penny ~$350 for solids.

I have an X-vent. At speed it flows much better than any other helmet I have tried, including the Jarrow mono convertible that I have now. When you're stopped, of course, it doesn't make much difference.

yeah i have a hjc cl14.  the venting is pretty crappy.  unless I'm going over 50mph, that visor is partly open (to keep the bugs out, and let more air in).  at higher speeds, visor shut works great.
at stoplights, i die and open the visor to breathe. lol

I have a friend that rides with an AGV X-Vent, and I have a KBC wolf. I've tried both on long rides, and must say that the ventilation is pretty comparable, and mine might even be better. The difference is that I got mine for about $120 brand new as opposed to the clearance price of $275 for the X-vent.

I have an Arai Renegade. It has mouth vent, brow vents and two roof vents, and love it. Arai is highly recommended!

I think that does it then, its gonna either be an Arai or the VR-1.

Get a Suomy Spec-1R.  They're on ebay for ~$290 (retail is a lot more).  Mine is quality (and made in Italy).  This is a cheap price to pay for the LIGHTEST and most comfortable helmet on the market, not to mention it's also BSI batch certified.  Impossible to fog up since it has racing vents that aren't closable (not the best for cold weather but it is a racing helmet).  The vents also stop buffeting at speed.  Removable liner and breath deflector, locking visor and awesome paint jobs are bonuses.  People complain about not being able to easily switch out the visor but they're idiots.

my two cents,  get over your full face problem. if yor going to crash and die, all it is going to do is make it easier to ID your dental records.  go get a brain bucket if your that hot.

Not to mention making it possible to have an open casket funeral.

What is that? Are you telling the author of the thread to get a full-face helmet, because he already said he wanted one. Or are you recommending he get a brain bucket, which is bad advice. I am confused about who you were directing that comment at.

Hey, better than starting the upteenth thread on well-vented helmets. ;)

My Scorpion 400 is well-vented - much better than my Shoei RF-1000.  I have to say, Scorpion is making a dang nice helmet for so cheap.

Arai Astral-X- I can hardly tell I'm wearing it after 5 minutes and regularly go for 1-2 hours.  $375 at CycleGear, they can be had for less at smaller indie shops- worth every penny.  It is your brain ya know!

Wear your gear- had a minor lowside biff today, was fully geared with exception of jeans instead of padded pants but the only damage was clutch lever- $9 from cyclegear (again) and nothing hurt but my pride- I'm a believer! :guns:
