Title: Where to spray starting fluid?
Post by: Crimson on May 25, 2004, 08:43:54 AM
Having a little trouble getting the old GS500E started after the winter, was going to try some starting fluid  but I admit I am an idiot.  Where do you spray it?  Take off the air filter and spray it into the intakes in the airbox?  Or somewhere else?

I've used it before...  I just lift the seat and shoot alittle into the air filter.  It won't take much.

Up your ass... :thumb: Sorry couldn't resist...
Anywhere is OK.. .cos it usually doesn't work... but take off air filter... dont want that crap in the filter...
Ok fine when you are spraying the fluid it may light up and fire, but if your jets are clogged it needs more than spraying stuff... I'd try draining the tank, and the carbs, and filling it with Iso-heet or Heet mixed in with gas...  Like 1/2 gallon of gas and a whole bottle of heet...  and letting the carbs fill wiht that and then try starting. Tank could be filled up before starting to ride it, so you aren't running 30% Iso propyl alchohol. Alchohol cleans it well, and once its clean, you want it diluted out.
The yamaha carb cleaner is the next step above this... and IMHO works very well, but its more work than just this. But I have used the heet/iso heet combo on my vulcan quite well last winter. Or try that seafoam in the gastank with fresh gas.
Cool.

yes into the filter.  its not really 'starter fluid' more like starter gas.  It works off the fumes.  Like I said, don't soak the filter, just a quick spray.  Read the instructions on the can.

Really?  Is it that much worse than having an air filter that was cleaned by soaking it in gas?   I would think that starting fluid would zip right through the filter....  (?)

Start simple!  If you don't want to pop the fuel tank and remove the filter, just remove the seat with your ignition key and ...

If that doesn't work, you're no worse off than before and you can look into the more "involved" methods.

EDIT:  Oops, someone beat me to it.  Sorry about  the "duplicate" post.
