After having my beloved bike serviced I fired it up from cold for the first time this morning, and I thought it was on fire. THere was blue/gray smoke cloud blossoming over the street. After discovering it was "just" from the exhaust I stuck my nose in the cloud and it didnt smell as oily as my cars toxic fumes. BUT I have been revving it to over 5k rpm for the first time and am wondering if I hurt it? Its only got 1000km (600miles) on the clock. I did notice that one of the things they did was "Adjust mixtures", could that and full choke be causing it? Unburnt fuel? Thanks for your help! I got a long ride tomorrow and dont want to end up by the side of the road in a puddle of tears and molten bike.
Black smoke is unburnt gas (too rich). The muffler will have black soot on the outlet. Blue/gray smoke is oil which could come from several things but mainly: bad valve seals or oil rings (the bottom set of rings on a piston). With that much smoke I would lean towards bad rings.
Is this a new bike being broken in? If so, I would take it back to the dealer to have them look at it, since it would be covered under warranty.
BTW...What kind of service was done?
It was probably just condensation, the mornings have been pretty cold of late and its just the way it is with the ole air cooled motor and it probably stopped after about 5Km?
Mine has done the same since new so don't worry, all the same as it has just been serviced check your oil level anyway never put full trust in the mechanics they make mistakes too :oops:

dgyver, it is a new bike and just been run in. Lukewarm lives in the same city and said his has done it from new. But thanks for the advice. Ill check the oil beofre I leave tonight, then book her into the dealer for a looksee. :cheers:
Lukewarm, it stopped after amout a minute. I let her warm up while putting on my gloves etc. Look forward to catching up next ride. Ill be able to almost hang with you guys then! :thumb:
yeah dont worry its no biggy, it at least showed me where the drain hole is in my muffler as it blows out there as well.
Its the same thing that happens to cars on cold mornings you know when your sitting in traffic and exhaust fog is all around you from the tin tops.

I keep forgetting that.
It's probably just oil left over burning off the exhaust pipes from the oil change of the first service.
The real question is: Does it run allright?
Could simply be they've overfilled it with oil. Check the level with the bike level and upright and with the oil filler cap just resting on the case - not screwed in.
