i just joined this forum, but i have been looking in to it for quite some time. anyways i just checked out the new 500f at my local dealer and i just wanted to ask what is up with the wierd assed front part. compared tothe ninja 500 the front looks bulky of large or something. as you probably can tell i am new to motorcyles because i sure dont know what that part of the bike is called--maybe the fairing?? i really dont know. enough of my crazy talk, laters.

The big plastic part that covers the front of the bike is the fairing. The old GS models had no fairing, and a round headlight. Fairings are good for wind protection when you're on the highway. The wind can really knock you around at times! And the full fairing of the new GS500F protects your legs from the wind as well. The bad part about those plastic fairings, is when you drop your bike or have an accident. They can be expensive to replace! Many of us with the older models put on a windscreen that just sits on top of the headlight and is a lot smaller than that big fairing!
ps, buy a used GS and customise it to your needs. Cheaper and more fun that way!
