so here is the scene. i was trying to pull a wheelie, which didnt go according to plan. . .at a very slow roll, i held in the clutch, and i reved up the engine to about 6000rpm. dump the clutch and just like planned, the front wheel comes up. i was doing pretty well for roughly 30 feet. i measured the scrapes and skids. the dismount was the ugly part.
i got a little spooked since i was running off line and towards the building. (i'll make sure i have plenty of room for error in the future. im retarded.)
i applied the brakes but nothing happened (because the front end is in the air... like i said, retard). i let off the throttle and the front end came down. since the front brake was still on, the front tire slid out from under me. the bike and myself slide in to a bunch of garbage cans and the air conditioning unit.
apparently, to brace my fall, i tried putting my right hand down. i immediately began picking up my bike. that is when i noticed my right hand felt pretty wierd. i got my bike back on its wheels and took of my glove to see what the problem is. my ring finger looked like a squared root sign. the middle knuckle was completely dislocated and squished under the connecting knuckle. it was so freaking disgusting. didnt hurt as bad as i thought it would.
i thought a ride to the hospital was in order till my dad suggested putting it back in place myself. 2 minutes after the injury, i firmly grasped the end of my finger. i took a deep breath and slowly, carefully, but steadily pull it in the direction i thought i should go. amazingly it snapped back into the correct place.
holy crap!!! i never thought i was a tough guy til now. i am amazed that i handled this so calmly. boy, it was such a incredible relief to feel that knuckle slide back into place. i really didnt want to go to the e.r.. my finger is pretty sore, swollen and a little black and blue. i think it can wait for the walk-in clinic in the morning. i am icing it down till then.
other than the finger, i got some very painful road rash on my forearm and a few other fingers are sprained too. the road rash hurts more than the knuckle does. not to mention a gereral soreness various places on the right side of my body.
and as for the bike. it is fine. the only thing that suffered damage is on the right side of the engine case. luckily the previous owner already pre-scraped it for me. i am waiting on the parts to come in the mail already. i ordered them about a week ago.
so there it is. don't go light on me. you can go ahead and let me have it. i deserve a stern talking to. heehee :nono: [/img]
all i have to say is GROOOSSSSSS. i can deal with the sight of blood and gore, but there's just something about someone "relocating" their own joints that gives me the willies. ugh! glad you're alright, overall. could have been heaps worse if you'd hit the building.

Next time, apply some rear brake to get out of the wheelie! No front brake at all until you land...
Hey, you were practicing out of traffic in a parking lot. That's where stunting should be practiced! Heal up quick and get back on the bike :)
lol, dude, that is so cool :thumb:
Can you show us pictures of your injuries, and the bike, I think everyone needs a visual reminder for what happens when you try that sort of thing.
I hope you heal up ok.
Umm, oh yeah, that was naughty, don't do it again :nono:
Did you have a jacket on?
jeff
i hope we don't have the same insurance company.
this sounds oddly familiar...
Thanks for the post. Its your post and those like them that keep me from trying that stuff
Wow. It must be wheelie season. You should check out my equally retarded post!
when u go to attempt it again make sure someone video tapes it....
as long as it is on tape and u can show it off a couple of broken bone and ripped up skin is a goood trade for a good tape
jiggersplat, how about you stop making stupid aside comments about how you disprove of practicing stunting. him falling off in a parking lot, and not hurting himself or his bike in any severe manner has nothing to do with your insurance. either flat out say you don't like people stunting, or don't say anything. but i notice this is the second post you've played passive-agressive and condesendingly spoken about stunting. i really doubt he's going to be collecting insurance money for a scraped case, you can stop worrying. geez. the man fell off his bike, dislocated a finger, fixed it, and wrote a humerous story, let him be.
oh, and glad to hear you're all well and good passive. the ladies love a guy who can relocate his finger. mind if i steal your story next time i go to the bars?
Quotethe ladies love a guy who can relocate his finger
:) Yes, that is really hot! But what really turns women on is guys that give themselves stitches! Or better yet, pull their own teeth. Oh baby.
Thanks for sharing your wheelie story!
Laura
Laura,
My buddy pulled his own braces off his teeth with a pair of pliers. How does that rate?
Thanks.
Smooth Dave
trust me, i can take the jeers and jabbs. i certainly have it coming. i think it is healthy to laugh at yourself sometimes. b.t.w. the ladies do love a guy with some battle scars and stories. you should see all the attention i've been getting cause of this. i should get hurt more often. ;)
i went to the clinic today just to make sure everything is alright. (and a little vicoden action) doc took some x-rays and told me that i set my finger very well and it looks really good aside from some torn ligaments and bruising. :thumb: he said it should heal just fine. gotta wear a little tape on my fingers for a while.
Insurance claim.... I Smashed My Own Dislocated Finger Back Into Place To Avoid Going To the Hospital! does this sound like the behavior of a guy that would call my insurance company over falling down at my house? . . . i dont think so.
i would love to post some pics of the injuries and the bike but i dont know how to do it. i will post some as soon as i figure it out.
oh yeah, i was wearing a t shirt, shorts, adidas shelltoes, a pair of joe rocket phoenix gloves, and a full face helmet.
now that i think about it , it couldn't have been 6000rpm that i reved it up to. it must have been more like 8000-9000rpm. that front end came up like it was nothing.
Ok, lets try this shall we, for those looking to wheelie, lets try and make this less painful and less costly, remove your mirrors and change your turn signals out to small Bug eye/Marker light type lites, they are cheap and you still hold on to your old stuff to put back on. If you have full fairing on, remove it. and stick a aftermarket headlight on. invest in some case savers of somekind to save the sides of the engine. remove grab bar and build a T bar bracket to help protect tail light and aid those 12o clocks, i just made a rack for mine outa 1/4 steel plate and let me tell you, i can stand on it @260 lbs.(will have to get pic of it) the idea is to hold on to the nice stuff so once you become comfortable and proficient at walking on the rear, you can put it back on, and have less chance on messing it up. once i have my mini truck, i might start back into the stunting bit, endos, rolling burnouts, and work on wheelies. but not while its my only transpo. YOU ARE GOING TO DROP THE BIKE WHILE LEARNING. fact find a used fuel tank and sides too no sence in messing up your nice stuff. INVEST in alot of clutch and brake levers, old dirtbike bars are helpful too.
Now, get some ballast(weight) on the rear part of the seat, over the rear wheel. this will help things come up alitle more predictable. bumping up the rear sprocket to 42 and down one in front will help the power up type and need less clutch work. invest in new clutch plates and springs with higher pressure. I shimmed my clutchpack and used longer springs from another GS and its helped alot. once you can get in the zone on regular basis, remove some weight, keep doing this untill you dont need any, another trick is to put your feet on rear pegs and goose it (WARNING! YOU GIVE UP REACHING REAR BRAKE SHOULD YOU OVER-ROTATE!) though this method works best with a bike that has few more ponies then the GS. i must agree, dirtbikes are the best to learn wheelies as you can do this in dirt and break less items, mainly arms, legs, ankles, ribs etc. the bike generaly fairs better too. Cops are less likly to mess with you if your playing in the dirt. its a good way to learn ballence AND (racers correct me if im wrong) learn to get comfortable sliding the bike around. so if you slide on street you have better chance on controling the bike Vs freaking out and gettinghurt.

You did exactly the right thing. Those things go back in much easier if you do it straight away. Usually, by the time they get to us in the ER it's several hours down the track and the thing really won't budge- combination of swelling around the joint and spasm in the muscles trying to keep the finger still. Usually needs lots of analgesia and a much stronger pull. :thumb:

Gotta love a smart shopper. Actually, I'm curious, how did that work out for him? If I remember correctly, I think when I got my braces taken off, (many many years ago), the highly paid orthodontist just pulled them off with pliers.

for those of you who wanted to see pictures of the bike and my injury, check out this thread...

I did tons of wheelies last year and never fell "Knock On wood". Lucky me I guess. Have a hard time on the GS though. Tryed alot, more clutch slipage than wheelies.
