Title: Replacing '02 Front Brake Lever
Post by: Gleanerizer on June 15, 2004, 05:54:16 PM
I need to replace the front brake lever for my 2002 GS, but replacing the entire stock assembly is a bit much for me, pricewise.  It's nothing horribly serious, just the end-ball broken off, though I still want to replace it.  I believe that GS500's from 2000 or earlier (I think?) will not have brake levers that will fit the '02, so I'm having a hard time finding used.  Any suggestions?

bump for you.  I'm in the same boat with my 2001.  I need one for a reasonable price.  Bikebandit i think has them for 40 bucks.

Super glue is my temporary solution.

Here is a cross reference list of levers that work on various bikes. Note that some will have an adjustment knob like the GSXR but will fit the GS.

Brake lever:
89-04 GS500
92-93 GSXR600
97-00 GSXR600
86-00 GSXR750
89-98 GSXR1100
99-00 GSX1300R
97-03 TL1000S
98-03 TL1000R
99-02 SV650/S

Clutch lever:
89-04 GS500
86-00 GSXR750
89-98 GSXR1100
99-00 GSX1300R
97-03 TL1000S
99-02 SV650/S

Thanks, dgyver.  I didn't really want to drop $45+ to just fix a broken lever ball.  Maybe I'll put on a Hayabusa brake lever, that'll sound impressive on a mod list!

dgyver, thanks for the list...but i thought that brake and clutch levers for the earlier model GS500's (89-00) weren't compatible with those from 01+?  :dunno:

That list was compiled from several different sources. I added some that I knew of as well. I cannot confirm nor deny the 01+ being non-compatible. They may be different but am very sure they would fit. If anything they just added the adjuster knob. If I am wrong, please correct me.

Anyone have a pic of the 01+ brake lever?

I'm pretty sure that the '01+ brake levers are different from the earlier GS's.  I base this only on the pics I saw in the OEM brake lever diagrams on Bike Bandit, comparing my OEM lever with earlier models.  They do look quite different.  Only having those vague-looking diagrams to go on bugs me no end, as I could easily settle this once and for all if I knew someone with an older GS500E, take off both of our brake levers, and just compare them.  Until I can do this, though, I guess this will remain a mystery. :dunno:

I have a 2001 - bent the brake lever and tried to use an aftermarket lever listed as fitting several bikes including the earlier GS 500.  The adjustment knob had only 4 settings instead of six -  and it did not fit.

Yep, the older GS only has 4 settings for adjusting on the brake lever. You lucky buggers have six? (well, not so lucky as you don't have aftermarket ones)
