well i was on my lunch break today and saw a friend in front of me so i decided to get on it a little bit to catch up. as soon as i roll on the throttle the grip turns and no gas!!! so i pulled over and had to call a friend with a pick-up. anyone have a similar expirience? also can you do it yourself? short on the cash flow and cant afford to get someone else to do it.
You can most definitely replace the throttle cable yourself. I haven't ever detached mine at the throttle grip end, so I'll defer to someone who has.
But I have rerouted my throttle cable, and detached / reattached it at the carburetor end MANY times. It's a little tricky the first time to understand what's going on at the carb end with the 2 nuts and the adjuster, but there's really only one way to do it.
PS - I can't remember what model year you have. I understand that the '01+ models have a dual-cable setup, whereas the '89-'00 models only have a single cable.
It is no problem to change cables. Disconnect the cabel from the carbs. Unscrew the 2 halfs of the right side control from the bar. There is a screw that holds a small plate attached to the bottom of the cable housing that needs to be removed. Now you can undo the cable ball from the throttle. Note the routing of the cable through the bike before removing. Pull out the bad cable and reverse the steps to reinstall. Finally, adjust the throttle so there is about 1-2mm of play in the grip.
I've had a similar thing. My choke cable snapped one morning. Then I pulled up to a stop light and my clutch cable snapped :( A 93' Katana 600 cable fits, barely for a quick fix.
