Hey ladies and gentleman, I'm new to the GS500 scene but I'm loving it so far. I just ordered up an airtech kit for stylin' on my '97. But my big question is, I have pretty much little money left so I can't afford to re-do my whole exhaust. I'm looking for a slip-on with a good, high pitched sportbike sound. I want it loud as can be. Help!
Gotta be honest, man. No-one on this board (hopefully) will advise you on anything that will just be for noise. This bike is a twin, so it will never scream like one of those 600 crotch rockets, especially with its relatively low redline. If noise is all you're after, why not just get yourself a particularly flighty young chicky to sit on the back while you ride. the screaming will be indistinguishable from a sportsbike and will cause you as much pain. :P

Having read some of the past threads I am not so sure about this ("Drilled out the baffle" comes to mind), but I heartily agree with the sentiment.

My point exactly- the louder noise is a byproduct of the search for more performance, not an end in itself. If you want that sportsbike howl, get a sportsbike. Love the GS for what it is, not what you wish it was.
Also, why piss off the legislators (via their masters, the people) any more than you have to.
I love the sound of a twin over inline 4 myself :dunno: And I've got both.

well, honest owners, good advice, maybe i should stick to a gs500 after all....my problem is i gravitate towards the gsx's. it must be in my blood. but i need to be honest too, i want to improve the sound of my bike, vance and hines or cobra f1r?
Honestly, drill the can.
It takes less than 5 minutes, and you can always upgrade to a true slip on later.
Since your on a budget, drill the can. Here's a site that tells you how, just go to Modifications>Engine>Exhaust Mod.

Although I'm not sure how it effects the engine running in terms of proper backpressure and jetting issues, it will certainly make your bike louder. That and you can't beat the price!
Worst case scenerio - You don't like it and replace it with a slip on.

If you don`t like the sound after you drilled, you can alway`s put some plugs or screws in the holes. Works great. By the way, the effects on your backpressure and stuff is minimal. I drove my GS with 3 6mm. holes in it for +-30.000km and the valves were fine (a mechanic checked the valve clearance for me). Read all about it at www.bikepower.net

If you want to waste the money on sound, Cobra (F1) makes a slip-on with out having to rejet the carbs. I think its around $150.
