Title: Went Down! Thank Goodness for Gear!!!
Post by: akh223 on June 21, 2004, 07:41:40 PM
Well, I was out for a 3 day ride with some guys from work.  They all had touring bikes, Triumph trophy, Honda ST1100, BMW K1200LT, and a BMW R1150R!  I was on my trusty gs500 and I was doing very well for the first 2 days.  We rode from Asheville, NC all the way up the blue ridge parkway, and then about 70 miles of skyline drive before heading west and then south again on some back roads.  Sunday rolled around and we again headed south west to get home.  We were on some Virginia back roads and coming around a pretty sharp somewhat slow speed turn there was some gravel in my lane, and a car coming in the other lane.  The car passed and I was on the brakes to slow and try to make it thru the corner.  Well, it all happened so fast that I am not sure if I stayed on the brakes too long or locked em up when I saw the gravel, or if I just slid out on the gravel, but I ended up in a lowside at about 25 mph.

I must say that the Fieldsheer mesh gear that I was wearing held up very well.  There is a hole in the knee, and the plastic armor was scraped up pretty bad.  There was also scrapes on the hip pads, and on the ankle area of my teknic defender boots.  The Mach 1 jacket I was wearing protected me well, and had some torn up areas on the forearm and elbow area.  The elbow armor also got a bit scraped up.

My helmet/head never hit the ground, I think my arm was inbetween the helmet and the road.  I was also wearing some gericke gloves, but I didnt really have time to get my hands down, so they were not really affected.

The amazing thing is that my only injury is a jammed thumb on my left hand.  I guess the bars twisted and jammed my thumb.

I have no road rash!!  I am very pleased with my gear.

Thanks for reading, and please, always wear your gear.

Andy

P.S. Anyone looking for a bike to rebuild??

You are not supposed to crash test your gear. Glad you are ok! I am sure we can repair the bike.

I will try to get some pics of the gear and bike up tonight.  I started tearing it apart last night to asses the damage.

If you haven't moded as of yet... it's time young one. Forget the past and what your bike was . Look to the future for what it can be.

Glad to hear you are good and that the gear held up.  My thought for my mesh gear is if it holds up that "one time" then its done its job.  I'll replace it for the next time.
Good luck!
