Title: Legend of Seamax

I've always loved this bike since I first saw it years ago.  The 600/gs500 idea came from this bike as I thought the lines were perfect.  My rendition ended up coming out different but somehow God blessed me and Seamax passed me the mantle to own this legend of a bike.

It came in today by 1aa motorcycle shipping company from Oregon to Texas!  All looks well on it, except some rub marks from the straps.  Not too worried about that since we'll be respraying it soon. :D

So I want to keep track of it here and hopefully share the experience.  Ready to get it going again!  Stay tuned for GSXR1000 engine swap!

ok just kidding,..haha

So glad to see this went to a GStwinner.
Being in Oregon myself, I was very tempted to buy it but really didn't need another project.
Can't wait to see what you do with the bike!

Show!  There you are!  When are you going to build something?  Miss seeing your work

Maybe I should rename this Secrets of Seamax  For me it is deeply interesting to see how someone figured out how to build something.  Got some time to begin yesterday,...

never thought I'd see these two together!

suspenseful! haha I have to say these fairings are thick!  I bought a race fairing for a cbr once and it was thin and nothing like these.

wth is that,... ah gel battery

tried to save this with pro-logix charger but kept coming back ERR so I think it's done

you can see the thickness of the tail fairing,...

impressed with this seat.  The material is grippy and foam is thick.  Prob comfy for long rides,...

not sure if this was cut down from gs seat pan or from something else, but again, thick base and solid

fun with wiring.  Seamax told me he didn't have a welder and I've been dying to see how he engineered his support.  This is nothing short of brilliant if you ask me.

just for later reference

carb time,....150 main and pods,...

reference pic

pretty clean inside,...cleaned out just to go through them and be sure,...
i haven't worked with gs carbs in awhile and they seem tiny.  Have an xs400 I
finished up recently and the carbs are much beefier. :dunno_black:

back in and hope to fire up this weekend

anybody have an .02 on these?  I put a rear on my gsxr but sold it before I really got to see if it was any better or not.  Looked better is all I could say,...

Got some time and changed the Orings in valve needle assembly (that's what fiche calls it anyways).  Back together and no leaks with a quick start.  Need more time :dunno_white:

:D I'm so happy. Haven't heard her purrr and rumble for over 2 years.

I'm glad she went to a fellow gstwinner cause she deserves and needs to be ridden. Hmmmm, my wife would probably disapprove of these comments.  :icon_razz:

She was built on a shoestring budget as my first bike without any welding skills from me and very mininal fabrication skill. I learned a lot from this board and working on her.

Keep us update cause I really want to see what vision and upgrades you have for her.

Jason, also have you figured out what I made the under tray from? hahahahaha. I sent you a new one to modify cause you will need to replace the torn current one.

Yessir!  More of your geniusness right there! (https://www.motohouston.com/forums/images/smilies/topsecret.gif)  It's funny cause I did similar on my gs600rr idea but you did it better!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
not much going on lately since I've been working on a voyager for a friend. I think I'm almost done with it though.  GS I swapped in a k&n after pods frustrated me to where I was sick of trying.  Went so far as to order a cheap oem airbox just to try if I keep having problems.  I have some Sudco carbs I'm itching to see if they'd work but I need to mod the top cables for clearance.  I dunno,....  Still need to finish this old soldier first,...

Was starting to get frustrated and pulled carbs.  I'd never really heard of 150's even with pods, so dropped to 142.5 (that I had) and ordered some 140's.  Success,....  Played around a bit as it bogs if you hit the throttle too hard.  Seems like when you get moving it has good power.  I think the 140's will solve that.  Glad to finally get it rolling.

Next'll be to fix that undertail (cracked), figure out some bolts,....and paperwork.  I'll likely ride it as is for a bit then start working on paint.

Oh yeah! bring back the mid 2000's hooligan sport bike days.
Its very cool to see that bike running again. Definitely has a look of a certain vintage.

Seamax is now in Oregon ??? I thought he was in the Midwest, Iowa or something circa 2010 when I made a NC to WA run ?
Anyway - cbr - 150 is the right jet for pods and pipe. If you're dropping to 140, its very likely you have something else wrong with it - mainly float level.
If I recall I did a carb set for seamax - not sure if it was that exact one - but, 150/40/1 washer/3 turns is the setup for K&N and pipe.

Cool.
Srinath.

Thanks Buddha,...as always, appreciate your guidance and immense knowledge :whisper:

That means I need to get back in there and do some more cleaning and looking.  :thumb:

Set the floats to about the top of float bowl and no more, in fact put em 1mm lower, the floats tend to drift and wear higher, much like rust and gravity, buoyancy apparently never sleeps either.
K&N and pipe will be 150/40/1/3/float at top of bowl and will run like a beast. I would almost say run it with a WFO pipe - none of those sissy noise reducers needed here and it would use every bit of what the 150 puts out. Its a well proved setup, I don't even know who started the 142.5 BS, those may work for K&N with stock pipe - may being operative word, cos I never ran that setup.
I ran the 150/40 and 125/40 (for a stock/slip on bike) with an O2 sensor screwed into the exhaust. It may make a touch less HP compared to a 147.5 but for drivability in cold wet conditions the 150 is unmatched for the K&N and pipe setup. Similarly with the 125 for stock/slip on only.

Cool.
Buddha.

Went back in to find plugs super lean with the 142.5 and followed the guru's advice to replace 150's and 3x's.  Haven't run it yet but maybe tonight.  Fingers crossed it'll be better.  With 142.5 there was a hesitation to throttle up.

Want to find some mufflers to replace those huge cups.  Interesting exhaust designing by Seamax underthere.  Definitely solid!  Not exactly sure how that came together (http://www.chinariders.net/images/smilies/smiley_emoticons_confused.gif),.... Anyways, inspired by my R1's tail exhaust and my love for underbelly cans, I want to do a little presto change-o.

Sorry about the cups Seamax  Looking for some clean replacements,....

Cleaned carbs again, swapped in the new 40's Seamax sent me and added a washer.  Things seemed pretty good,...

Decided to take it out and wow off the line it's great.  Then when you hit about 5000 it has a flat spot.  Got dangit,... :2guns:

Will keep messing with it,....

.........................................................................................
Pulled carbs and dropped in 04 carbs I had on shelf. With 22/65/147.5 no washer,....seems good. I didn't have a throttle cable and used old Kawasaki crappy one for a stand in until I can get a match.
Pulls with no flat spots. I'll ride it a bit and check plugs.

I'm hating the forks. I think they're supposed to have progressive springs but it's like riding a floaty waterbed. Have to fix that asap,....
Underpanel needs attention and then going to get my inspection and tags. woo hoo

...
fixed my throttle cable w a used one off ebay for $8.## which is sweeeet.  So smooth.  Anyways,...

my version of the gsxr flip up tank

attaching new cable in
(https://i.ibb.co/DkzzHSz/IMAG9180.jpg)

now to fix that janky underpanel
,.............................
tried a sheet of tin off of something unnamed :hithead: and that started out good bu it couldn't take the curve.  I ended up chunking it and ordering another similar model to the one Seamax had on there before :whisper:.  That should come in today and give it another shot.

Got in my 'panel' and whittled it away to fit.  I'm not crazy about this pattern but need to get my inspection done.  Going to look for a better fit/better pattern.

I dunno how my insurance was only $26.## but that was sweet to find out this morning.  Anyways, so far up to 60mph and feels good,...

Rode in to work today and passed by inspection.  'Get new tires,' he said.  dang it,...

Other than that, ride was ok.  Position up top is about the same as the k5 but leg angles not as tight.  Some broad in a mazda turd wanted to race :dunno_black:  Maybe she was triggered by my filtering.  It is one inch narrower than my chinese grom wannabe.  That's sweet for splitting :flipoff:

So, tires it is,... :bs:

My wife surprised me with buying me a hf tire changer.  I'd complained how hard tires were blah blah blah so she got me this.  I didn't have anything to mount it on and dug around in the attic to find an old engine stand.  Works pretty good for temporary stand.  The 'motorcycle tire' attachment at the top has a big rod that won't fit through the hubs I've done so far but I guess eventually I'll be able to try it.

Really need to put some spools on here.  Sketchy stand sometimes
(https://i.ibb.co/ctyrx2Y/IMAG9363.jpg)

bead breaker is such a helper.  I hated doing tires before this.  Now it's about 30 minutes to change one,...

wanted to try some shinko ravens cause i like the tread pattern and they have decent reviews.  Was hoping it'd give me a tiny bit more room on the sides and they do
(https://i.ibb.co/nsd1K6p/IMAG9366.jpg)

On to the front.  Now this stand is even more sketchy!  UNfortunately there's a piece of bracket support under the stem to where I can't use my understem stand :dunno_black:  So i had to use this poc  Wife helped me steady it to get it to where I halfway trusted taking the tire off.  Really I was waiting for it to fall over the whole time,...

I have a shinko (120) raven for the front too but this IRC is a 110 and if I don't use it now it'll probably end up in the attic never to be used.

Good to go and ready to try inspection again,.... :hithead:

Inspection closed.  WTH.  There's another one close to home but prob too many people there later.   :2guns:

Tagged some dude's mirror splitting this morning.  oops  Kind of felt bad but I guess it happens.  He kept going and didn't pull over anyways,....  my bad(https://www.motohouston.com/forums/images/smilies/eh.gif)

laterz,............
Went to ride home at lunch and sputtering and spitting....stalled out about 4 times.  Ended up pushing it half mile to gas station when genius here realized 'maybe' I needed some gas.  Filled up and roared home,...(https://www.motohouston.com/forums/images/smilies/angry2.gif)

Put the colortune on it last night and it looked ok,....nice blue

Plugs looked decent.  I wish it had more a@@ off the line.  It's great when you get rolling but right off the line it's kind of so so,...

Try again this morning and got inspection done,...  Tomorrow fun at the dmv for plates. :hithead:

running pretty good,...crank the throttle and is a fookin blassst!

My neighbor texted me after I blew through there that it was sounding nice.

Finally got my plate & registration.  Had a meanazz broad my first go around couple weeks ago that sent me home saying that I needed more information filled out.

Went back, unsure of what I needed to fill in on a line and different lady told me not to even worry about that; gave me my Texas plate with a smile.  Why do some of those broads down there at dmv make it such a pita :dunno_black:

Ah well, legal and running pretty good.  Picture challenge time :hithead:

just got in to work this morning and the more I ride it the more I love it,...when it gets going it really gets going :woohoo:

having fun w picture challenge,...

Thanks Show.  It's great fun and that exhaust makes it sound beastly.  At throttle it roars.  I'm not crazy about loud exhausts but I kinda like it. haha  I did get a couple of replacement cans to quiet it down and now not so sure I want to. :dunno_black:

that's awesome. I hate manual tire changing. If I had space I'd get one of those. Maybe when I get ready to do the tire change-o-rama I'll ride down to Houston with some Devil's Backbone in tow and talk you into letting me use your cool tools.
