has any one tried advancing or retarding the cam timing on a gs?  I know that on the race cars I work on this moves the peak power and torque up or down in the rpm range.  its usually done in 3degree increments until the desired effect is achieved.  just curious if any one has tried.
oops,  you'll need a new one of them

RIP RICH! We'll miss you buddy!

I would try doing a search for "cam timing" or "advance timing".  I was trying recently to find a thread to help me set my timing and came across a few that talked about advancing the timing.

Good luck!

we can slot the cam sprockets and get alittle adjustment, the problem however is the angle of the valves inrelation to eachother,  you can get a fair amount of piston to valve clearence with stock parts, but Valve overlap or height starts getting real critical.  i dont know for sure if there would be Much power gain in the gs500 by cam degreeing or not. perhaps would make the power peak alittle higher in RPM's is about it. Bob B would know better.  fact i got sloted cam gears from him and might have to again as my son told me 2 days ago he found and tossed a ninja star by daddy tools. as a result i cant find either one the 2
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.
Ride Hard...or go home.

Its you Vs the pavement.....who wins today?

Yeah they make cool ninja stars

I'm going to slot a few sprockets real soon to have some available.

When you get cams, they come with a spec sheet. This gives you the opening and closing degrees. Also the LC (lobe center).
The goal is to degree the cams to get as close to spec as possible.
I'm sure you can advance a cam beyond the specs. But I have no knowledge of how far or what good it would do.
I asked Dan Kyle (Dan Kyle racing engines) about this once and he said the cams come with specs for a reason. The cam manufacturer has engineered them for optimal performance at the specific spec. You may actually lose HP if you fiddle with it.
Of course, if you had a dyno, you could experiment and see what happens  :)

From the car enginesive worked on,  Ive learned that advancing or retarding the cam doesn't necessarily add or lose hp.  It affectivly moves the peak hpandtorque higher or lower in the rpm range.  In the cars it allows you to match the torque curve to compensate for transmission/ final drive, driver preference, and track conditions,  retarding the cam would give more top end power while advancing the cam would give more low end power.  i was consideringa 2 to 3 degree advance for more acceleration.  on a race engine that would usually move the peak hp and torue 500-700 rpm lower in the curve.
