Hello all,

First time posting here.  I have a 2000 gs500e, that I just got out of the shop tonight.
They tell me my starter motor is shot.  I'm starting to look to buy one online and do it myself.
Can anybody please tell me if the starter motor has ever changed on these bikes?  Could I
put one in from an older gs?  Know of any web sites selling them cheap?
Thanks for any help.

89 to current are all compatible. ebay will be your cheapest place, unless someone here has one they want to part with.
Common sense in not very common.

Thanks for the help and info.  I keep hearing  these starter motors are
bomb proof and RARELY ever fail.  Well, that's my luck.

Take a look at my avatar...that's a failed starter motor!

I've been into a few of these and I have found the biggest mistake is people trying to remove the electrical cable connection without proper tools.

You need a thin wrench to hold the bottom nut that secures the insulator block into the housing. When trying to remove the top nut, often the entire assembly turns with the top nut. This breaks the insulator AND also rotates the brush mounting on the inside.

If you buy used, DO NOT apply power to the unit until you have perfomed a thorough inspection. If you find a broken off cable lug on the unit, DO  NOT apply power until a thorough inspection. There should be NO RATTLING SOUNDS when shaken lightly or rocked end-to-end.

I have one spare and will negotiate just to get you running. I would like the bad one as part of the deal.

ive got a couple of them, but the ebay one is a fair enough price. the gs450 is the same should you see one laying around. 2 screws, 2 bolts and 1 nut and away it goes.
