Figured I'd chime in with a few notes from this weekend.  I started off with a stock GS500E throttle setup, which on clipons mounted below the clamps makes finding WOT difficult.  No problem, SV650 throttle tube to the rescue, right?  Shortens the throw, but still having to work to pin it...  A bit more researching shows the SV650 guys putting R6 throttle tubes in... if it'll work on their bikes, should work in the GS as well seeing as SV650 tubes are drop ins, right?

The R6 throttle tube is indeed a drop in, and GREATLY reduces throttle rotation to WOT from stock.  The range was about perfect with the clipons I was running.  I discovered the flaw in this setup Sunday when I lowsided on my right side though... the R6 throttle doesn't have the same OD as an SV650 or GS500 tube where the cable hooks in.  This section acts as a throttle stop, keeping the tube from rolling past closed, and eventually re-opening the throttle if continued to be pushed around backwards.  When I lowsided, the tube got forcibly rolled backwards, past the stop.  This wore my housing just enough that the stop is no longer functional with the R6 tube.  The stock and SV650 tubes still function properly.

So, if I'm going to try and run the R6 tube again, I need to either improve the throttle stop setup, or find a throttle housing that'll take it, accept the GS throttle cable, and match the kill and start switch pinout.  I used an OEM R6 tube (even comes with a grip pre-installed) and may see if the aftermarket ones have taller castings in the throttle stop area.  I hear there is an add on 'ring' for SV650 tubes to achieve the same throw as the R6 mod, might have to try that as well.

So, for now, I'd stick with the SV650 throttle mod till the R6 swap can be refined.

The SV650 throttle has done the trick for me for quiet a while. Like you said, however, depending on how you mount the clipons it can be at a weird angle to twist it the 70°

One thing I have learned to do is be like Ben Spies and put the elbow out a bit, making you grab the throttle a bit different, and actually makes it a bit easier.

I used a set of grips that included a new "carbon" tube, and that cut the slack perfectly for me.  Any more of a ratio (1/5th turn or whatever would be the next step) would be too touchy on the street, IMO.

That did help a bit, although I still find myself repositioning the throttle in my grip a bit more than I'd like.  I've got a few new ideas rolling around my brainpan for this...

If i understand correctly you are wanted a shorter throw right?  I saw a write up one time of a replacements for the inserts you can place in the trough area where the cable runs.  Instead of buying the part and spending a couple bucks to reduce the throw, the cut a zip tie and expoxed it in.  Real cheap way to reduce the throw and it retains all the stock throttle stops.

agree to this, using just your fingers (maybe top of palm) to rotate the throttle allows full rotation as well as forcing you to be a lot smoother on the throttle

I'm in the process of installing a Motion Pro 'Vortex' throttle to my GS500 race bike.

This setup requires a custom cable, and an aftermarket start/run button (which I was planning to do anyway.) Once installed, this should produce a 1/6th turn throttle.

When I work out the details, I'll provide all the required measurements and part information here.

I know this is an old conversation, but has anyone else tried the ziptie idea? I'm gonna go back to my clipons under the top triple in a couple weeks and wouldn't mind trying that. It's the first generation sv650 throttle tube that fits, right? what years R6 tube were people trying? I wouldn't mind that either, but I don't want to spend money on something I'm not sure about and I don't see any details in the wiki. The ziptie idea still sounds like the winner though.
