Anyone put on Gimbel rear sets? Got it done today! Yea!
« on: October 08, 2010, 06:51:38 PM »
Just got in a set today. Problem is no instructions at all.
Has anyone got instructions or can you send me or post a couple close up photos so I can see how it all goes together?

Cool! I guess you're earning that new right side cover I have  :icon_lol:
We'll work out the time tomorrow.

The sets are on ebay by bikeparts79. $235 + p&h.
Fussrastenanlage SUZUKI GS 500 - E
That really is Gimbel selling them. They use DHL postal (40 euros) so if you don't mind it taking a month to get to you. Final total a little under $300. That's how I'm ending up with duplicates and extras - I forgot I ordered something then I find something cooler somewhere else and order that. Soon I'll post a "garage sale" of all the extra belly pans, handle bars, headlight cowlings, tail side plastics, etc. Got in Gimbel belly pan and headlight cowl, but between when I ordered them and got them I found factory originals so that's just part of my story of extra parts.

It came with some documents in German which were stamped and signed. From what I've been seeing, after-market parts sometimes require paperwork showing they are legal. One document was a Suzuki document, then stamped and signed all over just like you see in an old movie. Maybe someone from Europe could sound off on those regulations and paperwork. Some parts I've seen mentioned that no paperwork is required and the parts were street legal (headlight, brake light comes to mind).

centuryghost came over and helped me put them on today.  :woohoo: Thanks a million!
Too bad its raining. Oh, well, I'll still go for a short ride to try them out.
never would have met another GS500 owner in my neighborhood if it weren't for this board. (Let's all update our profiles with our LOCATION  :icon_idea: )

GS-Triplets! 3 GS500's in my carport as we worked today. So nice - nothing but GS500's! :icon_mrgreen:

Anyone else have experience with Gimbel rear sets? I'd like to hear your tips on getting them on. We had to lower the center stand when UP by putting on a longer bumper - the foot lever part was too high (when up) and got in the way of the left foot between the peg and the shift lever. Also had to use the handy 'ol dremel to shorten the shaft on the brake cylinder. Otherwise, it was smooth even though there were no instructions.

The brake side

The shifter side

And Junior also got a new fuel cap

Here they are parked safe in the carport away from the rain. You can see the rain at the top of the picture and the wet ground. If you can't ride then tinker with them!

I do no think that is his bike. He was just giving an example from another user. I think adidasguy is trying to make some seat cowls though. Look here -

Not the same, but similar to the Gimbel seat. On ebay, Gimbel is seller bikeparts79

http://shop.ebay.com/bikeparts79/m.html?_nkw=gs500&_sacat=0&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_odkw=&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3911.c0.m270.l1313

I am working on it. Have ordered a few and found a few to decide what to make and give an example to my friend that does plastic and fiberglass fabrication

By the way, NEVER buy from Cowl Tech. Ordered a cowl 10 weeks ago - NOTHING. They are crooks.

I'd prefer the more contoured one that you got pictured in the other post. I might even take a lick at some fiberglass work and try building one. But the white and decal you show is just what I'm looking for. I'll figure out how to modify it for a 500e.

The rearsets look great. Get a chance to ride them yet?

I always love the keyless gas caps too, just never feel like paying for them.

Will those rear sets work on a F model? They only advertise for E.

I have a 92 and an 09. It would fit on the 09. You do have to shorten the shaft on the rear brake master cylinder and deal with the center stand foot lever coming up too high (lengthened the bumper for the center stand so it doesn't swing up as far) but I think the center stand issue would happen with any rear set that moves the pegs back.

It is a different ride. Lots of fun but not my style for a long trip (That's just my preference for riding position). It puts you in a more aggressive position. You must have factory or after market clip on bars. They force you to lean because your feet are back farther. Stock bars are too high so you'd feel like you were arching your back. As you know, I have the factory clip ons and they are perfect for me. Somehow it makes the shifter feel nicer. I don't know why - maybe with the linkage the foot lever travels more? I don't know, but I like it. Brake feels the same.

I'll take a side photo this week like I did in another thread for the difference between the stock bars and the factory clip ons.

I need to add that the combination makes the bike feel smaller, more sporty and more maneuverable. I feel more "at one with the bike". Makes me just want to do twisties and swerves. Just for fun, I swerve around every thing I find in the street rather than just riding straight. My 09 always felt bigger due to the faring, but I think you'd get a cool ride on it with bars and rear sets. The 09 will stay mostly stock however I will take off that crappy stamped steel brake lever and replace it with the older one with the rubber lever.

I was going to put on a Tarozzi set. They advertise for the 89-91 (and we know it is the same through 2010) but there is no way Tarozzi will fit. I've contacted them and still no response. They won't even tell me what bike they did make them for or why they are totally wrong. DON'T BUY TAROZZI for a GS500!. Gimbels are Suzuki approved in Germany and we know they fit. Buy the Gimbels off of ebay from bikeparts79 (it is Gimbel's ebay ID).

I don't mean to be ignorant or rude, but what is the benefit of aftermarket rearsets except for making your wallet $300 lighter and looking really nice and sporty?
do they improve handling in any way?
is shifting easier?
is the grip better?
what about vibrations? aren't they worse than when using stock rubberized pegs?

It's a serious question. I really don't know the answer!

By the way, they really look nice  :thumb:
