The issue with exhaust wrap is that it speeds up rusting on the headers.A good sanding and painting before the wrap will help.Over time rust pin holes will burn the wrap. The GS headers are made from a low quality steel to keep manufacturing costs down.

I've used titanium wrap on my old '73 CB350. My pipes are very rusty and I didn't have the $$ at the time to get new ones or to powder coat them, so I wrapped them to make them look better. I have heard that wrap can cause additional rusting because it holds moisture from rain or condensation, so you may want to take that into consideration. However, if you ride often, the heat burns off the moisture, and the rust won't burn through the titanium wrap. I only wrapped mine because they were already rusty. If your pipes are in good condition, you may want to reconsider, or accept that at some point a few years down the road, you may have very rusty pipes. Also, follow the instruction about that wrap... it's nasty stuff to get in your skin. It also stinks and smokes the first few times you ride with it because it needs to be cured. But after that, it's good-to-go.

A few of us here is West Seattle use Rutlands stove polish (in the tube). It is a wax polish for cast iron stoves and flues. Makes your pipes look really great. You don't have to take them off to apply it. Every so often just apply a little more. Makes them look like new, helps prevent rust and is so cheap and easy to do.

Compare the look. TREY is on the left and used stove polish. Someone else's on the right with rusty pipes.

Awesome! My pipes are rusted and due to a seized bolt, they wont be coming off... going to try to find that stuff locally.

Get a red(more like maroon) scotch bright pad from the auto parts store and rub the pipes down with it first. Then wipe them down with paint thinner.Let dry and then use stove polish.

What if you have aftermarket chrome pipes?

I was thinking about wrapping my pipes from the red line to either the green or blue in the picture above.

Chrome will rust too, it just takes longer than plain steel.

No such thing as any rust proof steel... unless its in the vacuum of space. Every single steel alloy has the capacity to oxidize... no way around it. Granted some are much worse than others. I had a polished stainless steel dive knife that was completely destroyed after my second dive with it. Then I bought a high carbon steel one that everyone warned me would rust like crazy and it lasted forever, never more than a tiny bit of surface rust.

Big Rich

Agreed. I work as a machinist, and we have been doing a lot of stainless recently. Many people aren't aware that different grades of stainless will rust ....
