GS500 2005 NO SPARK
« on: January 06, 2019, 02:56:34 AM »
Hello fellow motorheads,

These last couple of days have been very frustrating.
I've bought my first bike of an auction and it's super clean other than the fact that I just cannot get a spark...

Here are some of my findings:
Sparks
Have been replaced, should be good

Battery
Has been replaced, has enough power now

Start motor and the rest of the electrical system
Works flawlessly

Ignition system
- Coils: Primary coil resistance: 4,9Ω (L) and 5,2Ω (R)
Secondary coil resistance: (through spark caps) 29 000Ω both sides
- Pulse/signal generator: B-Br: 330Ω and looks good (as far as I know)
- ICU: no idea how to test (+ color of my cables is different from the wiring diagram)
- Side stand switch: bridged, nothing changed
- Side stand relay: clicks with 12v applied but can't hear it click when I put the side stand up (with power on)
- Clutch lever position: jumped
- Neutral switch: don't know where it's located and I don't really think that's the problem

I also traced almost every wire for continuity and that doesn't seem to be the problem.
Any suggestions? Would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

hello,

Have you checked if you have +12v in the orange wire that goes to the coils?
You can also check if the resistance between the signal generator cables changes as the engine is turning

The igniter receives the pulse of the signal generator(left side cover) and sends it to the coils to start the spark plugs
The igniter should have 12v and the signal from pickup(signal generator) to send pulses to the coils

- ICU: no idea how to test (+ color of my cables is different from the wiring diagram)
Which color? use as reference the color of the wires from the igniter

Hi Armandorf,

Thanks a lot for your reply!
It turns out, it wasn't even electricity related :).

SOLUTION:
I, as a newbie, couldn't recognize the sound of the starter motor. The starter didn't engage with the engine.
I took of the stator cover plate and tightened the bolt as explained by adidasguy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxS5yZ44AHU&t=752s

it runs!
