Just got a GS! Ok, a few mod questions (handlebars&m
« on: June 07, 2004, 04:20:59 PM »
Hey guys, i just went out and bought a fellow Gstwin'ers gs :P ! I haven't rode since i crashed my cbr600. WOW  :thumb:  is all i have to say. I felt so relaxed and comfortable with this bike. It was everything i wanted and could have expected ... and more. It ALMOST seemed like it could handle better than my CBR (probably just the rider!).

Anyways, this post is to ask people a few mod questions cause i'm so new to the GS life.

1. What are my options for lower handlebars to give me a more sporty ride?

2. What kind of bulb does the GS have (h4?), and what options do i have for headlight modulation?

3. What options do i have for exhaust systems?

4. What kind of options do i have for mirrors that don't look ugly as hell (AKA STOCK GS MIRRORS)?

If you guys could throw up hyperlinks to places that sell this kind of stuff THAT'D BE SICK!!!

THANKS!!!! I"M SO EXCITED TO RIDE MY GS!! I

Exhaust ... basically cut the can and slip somehting on it, any sport bike can will work, non flanged kind is best. A rejet will help get the cobwebs out from the damn thing. Progressive springs and a Katana rear shock are good mods especially if you are heavier, 120-130 lbs + the front is in adequate, and if you tip the scales at 180+ the rear is pathetic. Mirrors, ok Bar ends are possible, but I never have used them, I have napoleans on mine, and like it, but they look like stock really, just with that funky boot on it. Bars, I made some and have some more I can make. They are like flat, but give you the right angle for decent comfort, and leave your wrists natural, the bars essentially are level with the top triple. SM bars are stainless and have some different angle but still comfy is what pablo says. Clubmans just dont work on this bike. Drag bars are a bit too painful on longer rides.
Cool.
Srinath.

Can you give me pics of what the bars look like installed that you made? How much do you want for a set of bars? Oh, do you know if the GS has a h4 headlight bulb?

Ok, they look good, sound good... but next i'm wondering (sorry to ask so many questions) what i have to do to them to fit the gs? Do they accept my stock bar ends? Do i have to drill holes in them to mount brake lever/clutch assembly, etc.? Thanks.

Questions:

1. Does anyone know if Srinath's bars fit on a 2004 gs500f?? will it hit the fairings? anyone tried??

2. Srinath, r u ever gonna offer one that's properly painted? so guys like me with no experience in primer and painting stuff don't have a chance to screw it up :)

3. How many people in Canada want them? I'm in Canada and I want one, and I know there's few other up here who wants one right? Srinath did u say u needed 10 orders from Canada to make it worth it to ship them up here? how much would it cost in this case? otherwise i'll get them shipped to seattle and i'll pick it up from there... only 2 hrs ride from vancouver anyways...

4. What's the difference between the 1/8th and 3/16th bars (besides the thickness of course) ?  any difference in riding? difference in fitting the stock stuff onto them? will all the stock grips, bar ends, controls, etc, fit onto both the bars easily?

5. Do we still have to drill the holes ourselves for the controls in the new bars? i prefer for them to come with the holes already (if the holes are needed).

sorry for all these questions.
thanks

i'm with him about the holes question. I'd prefer them to be pre-drilled too. OR! just have marks where they SHOULD be drilled. I could drill them if i knew where the holes are supposed to be.

OK not made more yet, I am making them this week... but wait till they actually get made, cos my welders shop is flooded with projects... mine and others, and the case savers are in the machinist shop... anyway...
1/8th wall have a rod inside, cos they bent easier than 3/16th's... so wanted to get them stronger. They all were stronger than stock but that's not a point for comparison... Other than that the 3/16ths I have re jigged them for 01+ and the 1/8 were 90-00... but no reason that's hard and fast either.
Cool.

K I realize I didn't completely answer all...
1. They fit the 01 and 02... not sure on 04... I think they should be fine ...
2. paint... OK I'll paint thne with muffler paint... its dull black, but its the only paint I have used that dries fully and doesn't need a lot of prep and goes on thin enough to not cause throttle tube bind.
3. Frost was pushing for them, but since his crashing the bike he's understandably quiet. Paper work is crazy, so doing a lot of 10 is better for me. But USPS may be better for paper work, so I may do that on a fewer number.
4. Already answered.
5. The hole for the switch nub... I cannot drill that, cos that might not be the location you want... these have good adjustability, and drilling it in 1 spot means losing that, I also have an alternate idea... I'd sorta shave off the nub in the switch and leave it like it was chewed off, so it grips the bar wherever you put it.
Cool.
Srinath.
