Ahhhh this is so cool... I love it.  That last pic looks awesome, no doubt.

I am loving it Big Rich... that looks realllyyy cool!  Tell me, do you have a pic of the bike from the side with those rearsets on?  I wanna see them in relation to where the seat will be, etc.  :D

I use aluminum for a lot of the custom stuff that I do, mainly because it won't rust!!  I hate rust  >:(  Did you use it cuz it is lighter?

I should have modded the frame etc etc to mine before I powdercoated it. In fact its coated a beautiful silver with mica flecks and clear coated over. Looks miles deep with simmery flecks. Worse yet, I coated the tank is flat blue. Sorta making a negative bike. What flat in normal bikes is shiny and what's shiny is flat in that one.
Anyway I am itching it hack it up now. The cafe world is calling.

Cool.

Awesome stuff as always Rich! That alu should be plenty thick enough I reckon... my fork "brace"/front guard mount is made from 2.5mm alu and seems to be holding up well to that torture after nearly three years...

Here ya go Showbiz:

The seat plastic is just resting on the frame, and it will be altered a good bit before it's finished (moved down / shortened / moved back). I used the aluminum because it's lighter....... and because it is SO much easier to work with than steel. I work in a machine shop for a living working with steel every day, so aluminum is a good break from the norm!

Buddha, good to have you along. I've never seen your GR (or the GS500 with a GR motor transplanted in it). Hint, hint.....

And Pete: I'm sure the aluminum plate will do the job. My butt is depending on it! Haha.....

Hahaha yep Rich I'm sure it will be fine! I agree with aluminium vs. steel too... not exactly a machinist myself but having played with both now I can only agree. The only issue I've had with aluminium is vibration and thinner pieces... tends to break quite quickly!

Pete, that reminds me - remember my plastic chain guard busted and we had discussed other options? Since I was running that GS450 L chain guard I just cut the entire rear mount off of it and used some rivets to attach it to the GS450 E/S chain guard. No more huge chrome guard on my swingarm!

But the GR is going to be sitting for a couple weeks, so no major updates. I will be stockpiling some parts in the meantime though. I need to replace a section of roof on my house, along with soffit / fascia / gutters / etc.

Yay.

Hey Big_rich - Did you get rid of that crazy contraption rear shock linkage and whatever its called.
I wanna go to a proper swingarm and shock setup - like shudder shudder ... a GS.
What you do in that part ?

Cool.

Aaaah good thinkin' Rich! I have a bit of galvanised steel rivetted to my plastic guard to hold the mount in place where it broke... ugly but serviceable.

Buddha, I didn't change up the rear linkage too much at all really. To fit the Ducati Monster shock in the GS750ES swingarm I did have to modify one part of the entire linkage to keep the stock ride height, but that's it. I remember reading a review about the GR650 and they mentioned the weight of the bike......and specifically said the experimental shock setup (at the time anyway) surely added a lot of unnecessary weight.

I'll admit: I don't have enough of a comprehension of motorcycle suspension to try and "start from scratch". Heck, even what I'm doing now can easily be reversed back to stock if need be.

Aaron, if it was silver & blue you had the "upgraded" model. Two tone paint, front parking light, mag wheels, and air assisted front forks were the only differences. The GR is a great bike.....once it is modified. But maybe I'm a little impartial.
