New GS500F owner Bundaberg ( possibly the home of GS500's)

Just bought a project bike GS500F 1994 with a 2011 engine apparently. Purists may want to leave now as I intend to do something with it but not sure yet. Used to race small bikes in Townsville but moved here and no racing for 100's of K's so any bike I get is going to get molested. Having said that I may go in a touring rig direction.
Not my main ride that is my Yammy MT07 and Husky TR650 Strada, the GS is to get creative with.
Never seen so many GS500's in one place. Bundaberg is crawling with them.

I have decided to go a very alternative route.
Seems that what we have here is a bike designed a VERY long time ago that has had virtually no development since the original model. Instead of going tourer, racer, ratbike, cafe racer ( strange reading of "cafe racer " nowdays. When they were original a thing , the idewa was to make it light and powerful and handle and look like a current racing bike. Now it means "look like and ancient racing bike...but I digress), I am going to rebuild the bike so it is more like a bike I would build in I were the designer of this type of bike now. I will use most of the base bike and improve anything I think needs upgrading or just plain because I can. Not going for mega performance but I intend to upgrade the suspension and get the motor running as right as it can be.
What I will also be doing is replacing any parts that are old design and heavy with made lighter parts, replacing the gauges with an electronic unit, shortening the seat ( single seat registration requirement), upgrading all lights to leds  and fixing the extremely poorly maintained parts ( ie the rear caliper had no pad on one side and the piston had ground into the disc...).
Started at 185kg. Lets see where we get. I will post on the project area. soon
