Hi everyone, so today I picked up this £100 gs500 2003 61k miles, MOT only ran out last Saturday, I have gone over the bike very thoroughly and doesn't look like it will anything for the MOT so it's booked in for Monday, will be a slow little project but will update as and when.

Oh yes that was the first plan to tidy the frame up with some hamerite just to make it a bit more presentable, not gonna spend loads on it as it was so cheap, but just do bits to it here and there when I have the time.

It certainly has, this is my first gs500 always wanted one and when this came up I had to have it, can't wait to ride it and tinker with it. Alot of people i have spoken to seem to recognise this bike, I'm going to try bring it back to life a little lol. Good to see you.

Does anyone on here know any ways to improve power on my 09 gs500?

Just get it running as sweet as you can in standard form. I don't know of anyone who has got any more 'real'  power out of one.
Possibly if you spent big on it you might get another HP or two. If it had a 4-valve head on it that would be a different matter.
People go through expense (and tuning troubles) trying to improve carburation, fitting pod filters etc, but you'd be better off just buying a quicker bike.
Beam me up Scottie....

Terrible advice. Absolutely get it running right in standard form but Filter (heh butt filter), exhaust and tuning the carbs to suit is absolutely worth it, if not essential and part of getting it running right. Might not make massive odds to peak power figures but it cleans up the torque curve, improving power delivery and Enhances what the gs has to offer making it much more enjoyable to ride and for very little cost if you're clever about it. Worth it on any bike but the gs is underwhelmingly subdued without the above, a gearing change further helps pick up a bit stronger and free up a bit of top speed. I'd be surprised if anyone with a tuned gs would disagree  :icon_lol:

We have a 4valve head, you mean 8v. There's a few mad franken-engines and gpz etc  big bores about but for the cost of serious engine work, there's very little to gain in peak figures and it's not for those who don't geek out on the engineering side of it. From what I've seen you can expect high 40s to low, maybe even high 50s (could be wrong, been a while since I read up) for a substantial amount of time, money and effort. It's fascinating but completely agree in that pursuing big power out of our engines isn't worthwhile for mere mortals or what the gs is about. Pretty sure we only get high 30 to low 40 wbhp standard but basic tuning gets you a step closer to claimed factory figures

Best thing you can do if you want it to be quicker is put the seat time in and hone your skills :thumb: if you wanna learn a bit about the bike and improving it then basic breathing mods and a gearing change will make it much perkier and more enjoyable to own, also make sure the valve clearances have been done. With the gs being built with budget in mind if leaves lots to be improved But Dshaff... use the search function or start a thread rather than jack a random thread when you need info, there's an abundance of useful info on here and the affiliated gs sites if you use a little initiative, that's just lazy  :icon_lol:

Anyyyyywayyyyy, Sorry for the tangent OP :icon_lol:

This dyno run is from the site owner.
The bike has mild mods of air cleaner, exhaust and carb jetting/tuning
43.2 HP at the rear wheel. (WHP). As you can see, all the power is up high on these bikes. You have to rev it up to go.

It seems typical that a good stock (healthy engine) will make 37 to 38 WHP and

(a worn out engine and poorly working carbs /state of tune is going to make less. Maybe much less )

A well tuned GS500 with air cleaner, exhaust, jets/tuning will make 43-44 WHP.

Sounds about right to me, with these little motors getting the fuelling right makes such a difference. Same with any engine but the difference in feel is profound when you've got little bhp to begin with, more so when you're on a budget commuter. Keeping up with Valve clearances is so important too. Actually every little thing is important.

I know the gpz big bores make about 50 +/-, for curiosity sake can you remember what any of the hybrid 8v etc make? Not that peak figures mean everything
