I have yoshi pipe and K&N lunchbox, and the bike is running rich no matter what I do. At the moment I'm running 130s with zero #4 washers. I say it's running rich because it's turning my plugs black. Everytime I try something new I put in new plugs and they turn sooty black.

Float height is dead on. I checked when engine was running and when it was off.  Valves are in spec.  Petcock isn't damaged. Running  40 non bleeder pilots. Pilot screw is 3 turns out.

Where could the gas be coming from? Thank you.

try a 22.5 if you want lean pilot's

uh . . . no, he obviously has a pre-2001 GS.

Is your choke cable too tight, holding the choke slightly open constantly?  What rpm range does the bike idle within?

ducati_nolan

Could be a stuck choke, or you could be burning a lot of oil. How's the oil consumption? If it's enough to cause the plugs to foul you'd probally be seeing smoke. Blue smoke=oil and black smoke=gas.

rangerbrown

i bet it will run lean if he goes

20 pilot
130 main's
that doesnt have mids.

if that doesnt have it then it blow by (oil buring) or the carbs are leaking some were? causeing extra flow of fuel

Pilots on pre-01's are 37.5. I put 40's in mine and it ran like shaZam!, try going back to the 37's.

Idles at 1500, choke cable not stuck.

OK I'll guarantee you ... I'll find it and fix it. Send me your carbs ... Worst case ... I'll run it on mine and see.
Cool.

Weird.  I think it has to be either a failing o-ring in the carbs (the one on the backside of the plastic slide support maybe?) or oil blowing by the piston rings.  A quick compression test could rule out #2 easily enough.

air fuel mix screw to far out or in :dunno_white:

Yea, that's a good point.  Try setting the mixture screws to 2.5 turns and see if it makes a difference.

Chris_B

Close the mixture screws to 1.5 turns out, if it's still rich its your pilot jets..

so I'm pretty sure I fixed it. The golden setup....

Zero #4 washers, pilot screw 2 turns out, 142.5 mains, and 40 pilots.

Ran great today, didn't foul the plugs. Seems a bit lean but adding a washer fouled it. I should have tried 2.5 turns. Anyways....

I was surprised how low the correct jets turned out to be. With a yoshi pipe and a K&N Lunchbox the GS500 Wiki rejetting matrix suggests high 140's, 2 washers, and several turns out.

But anyways. More riding tomorrow.  :icon_mrgreen:

are you sure those suggested Wiki settings arent for the 89-00 models (assuming yours is a newer one)? just guessing.

I was going to ask how the bike runs?

Last valve adjustment? (just a benchmark)

Are you using washers that are too big around maybe?  If they won't fit into the recession in the slide they'll make the needle hang up and make it way too rich @ mid-throttle.  #4 only refers to the size of the hole, not the outside diameter.  You need washers that are about as big around as the nylon donut.
