Came back from a ride today to find this. Haven't seen it before and I do tire checks every time before I ride. Is this just normal wear? This tire (rear) has 5000 miles on it.

Is this dangerous to ride on @ ~30mph around town?

mister

DO NOT RIDE ON THAT TIRE!!!!!!!

CHANGE IT IMMEDIATELY!!!!

To answer your question, that is Not normal tire wear.

So, you telling us, you checked before the ride and it was all fine, came back a few miles later of Normal sedate riding and it was like this?

Jumped on my bike, rode to the bank a few miles away then to my college to pay tuition. Rode on the freeway going 72mph for about 8 miles, then another 8 miles going 55mph. Then turned around and came home, and saw my tire like that. So my "ride" was about 40 miles.

If it's not normal wear, what caused it? I don't peel out or anything. Though most of my riding is on straight roads like freeways/highways

What mister said. Seriously, that is dangerous. If thats only 5000 miles, contact the manufacturer.

I bought these tires (Shinko) from my local Suzuki dealer. Should I go there with these pictures and have them handle it? Or should I contact Shinko myself?

So that's what a tire might look like after a burn out? Are you sure no one did any squidly things to trash your tire like that? Did anyone borrow your bike?

Curious - in the first picture especially. What is that small tread showing on the worn out area? Almost looks like the bottoms of running shows. That doesn't seem right as that tread marking is too small in size for a bike tire and I've never seen tread markings like that on a bike tire.

There is sand in it so it definitely is in the rubber as depressions. What did someone do with your bike? Those marks go from the thread bare middle out to where there is still plenty of tread.

Almost as if some machine were on the wheel or the wheel was driving some mechanical device or a park merry-go-round?

Does that pattern match any new pavement or bridge deckings? Looks sort of liek riding over a large metal file or cheeze grater.

What does the front tire look like?

I'd go to the dealer first.

Those running shoe like markings just don't look right. A normal worn tire would be smooth. Those depressions and markings should not be there. Try to think of what you were riding on that might have matched that pattern OR if someone borrowed your bike.

Another question: how hot was it today? Riding on hot asphalt that could have melted the rubber? And then rode over a metal grated bridge decking?

RossLH

I'd try the dealer you bought them from first. But as adidasguy did, they'll probably have some questions for you about how they were used.

Those small treads are from my shoes, which I used to spin the tire for these pictures :)

What do you mean a burn out? I don't do any burnouts on my bike. I don't do any squidly things and I don't let anybody else ride my bike.

Like I said, a lot of my riding is "straight". I've noticed how the tread has been wearing excessively in the middle of the tire and the tread on the outside looks brand new. Which is weird, since I also do lots of cornering. When I ride around town, I take the twistiest roads. Lately I've been taking hour-long trips (one way) on the freeway, but I've probably only totaled about 300 miles from those.

On my trip today, it was all on pavement and nothing else. My front tire looks almost new. The only metal thing I ran over was a cattle guard on a freeway exit, but that is 1" wide metal, which couldn't have made the pattern on my tire. The guard looked just like this:

Edit - It was about 85* outside. Rainy.

Looks like a tire that has had a few burn-outs honestly. Are the threads showing all the way around?

I have never ridden one down to the threads, but I was surprised at how fast a tire wears when you get past the wear indicators.

5000 miles is a long time on some tires. I got a little over 3000 on the Metzelers.

No, the threads are only showing on almost exactly half of the tire. I figured Shinkos would last more then 5000 miles but I could be wrong.

mister

I've got 25,000+km on my front sport demons and over 15,000 on my rear sport demon.

Of you are saying you never do burnouts then you need to check for the tire running on something on your bike..

Can you show us pics of where the metal is only partly showing. The transition point.

Could you reiterate?

I'll go grab pics of the transition right now. Also, I don't think it's metal showing, it looks like fabric.

That's a worn out tire and I've watched one go that way.  Was following the bike and the tire was completely black and then showed a narrow white stripe down the middle and soon it was a couple inchs wide in just a few miles, maybe 5-10 at most it's been a while.  We turned around and headed home slowly.  Surprised it only went about 5000 miles total but it was probably a cheap one.  Was that a Shinko SR741?  Made for oem on some of the Hyosung bikes and sold here at bargain prices.  I use to run my Dunlop tires to bald on my old Hondas but never to the cords like that.  Now down to the tread wear markers at most and they're off the bike.  When they start to go they go fast like Paulcet just said.  You'd get more life out of those tires if you put some of the wear over on the sides a bit.   ;)

Good point on something rubbing on the tire. Something in the under fender or caught at the front by the swing arm.
Did you have a fatty on the rear of the bike and the suspension bottomed out?

Still - that tread mark looks just wrong.

I was riding with a friend on the back last night and in a corner there was a slight bump and I heard the bottom of the fairings scrape the ground a little. I haven't checked if there's anything under the fender or at the front of the swing arm but I will momentarily.

Edit - There's nothing scraping the tire.

Here are pictures of the transition.

I'd say it is just worn out. The inner carcass may be a little eccentric to the outer tread (cheap tire).

You can now say you ride on the tire brand called "Maypop"!

errr ... wow! ...  :icon_eek: ... the local guys that i ride with constantly joke about shinko ... i've never paid much attention to why but this kinda wear could be behind it ..  :dunno_black:

one mate has a hyosung gt650 which had this rubber on... and i watched it degrade to this level ... but over weeks and weeks with everyone telling him to replace it NOW ... eventually he nearly binned it , scooped the poo outta his pants and got a new one next day ... but it was 3-4 weeks from initial tiny patch to the degradation seen above .. he does have a 'passion' for super hard/fast takeoffs at the lights though.

the edges of the rubber around the bare material ... some of the photos it almost looks like "rubber weld" (if such a thing exists) had been layed over a stuffed tyre ... but it may just be the remaining edge de-laminating away from the worn area too....

if i was having one of my maximum cynicism moments i would say someone with tools and knowhow did a superfast swap on your whole rear wheel during a break on the ride.. hollywood movie style ... but getting away with that unseen is just about ludicrous to consider really ..

again as it has been said .. maybe someone borrowed the bike while you were paying fees and smoked it up a bit .. but the wear looks like wear .. not like burnout which far as i have seen is usually more consistent all the way around the tyre, plus it leaves a roughness to the rubber which usually wont wear off within 50-100km ..

overall though .. while this type of wear CAN happen very quickly .. i personally doubt its from anything on the bike wearing on the rubber.. that would have to be noticeable in the feel of the bike during a ride!.. the mate i mentioned above with the hyo ... the bits of his tyre that were not worn right thru like this .. looked normal.. worn down but normal .. if he parked the bike with the shaZam! bits away from direct sight, you wouldnt know it was that bad... I respectfully suggest you may have not 'inspected' the tyre frequently, but rather glanced at it and not seeing one of the bad bits... assumed the rest was fine..  :icon_question:

in any case.. spend a few extra dollars on some quality rubber this time around ... cheap and cheerful might be fine on a little 'round the block shitbox' car where you have a whole metal frame to protect you a bit more .. but on a bike? .. nahh .. spend ALL the $$ you can possibly afford on good tyres that suit your riding style and conditions encountered.. if you have to eat cold beans on soggy bread for a week to pay for it.. so be it.

and before the tyre nazi's jump on me .. yeah i know that even good rubber cant make your turns/handling/body bulletproof .. but i'm pretty sure the cheap asian crap tyres (and shinko are made by ex yokohama machinery.... probably operated by ex buffalo farmers!) are long term not ever going to be any good! ... any 'developing technology' asian brand of tyre i have run into in the last 15 years on any vehicle has been crap ... ok for the short term and nicely cheap on the pocket .. but still crap! .. this is not a racism thing .. this is a cheap crap thing!!  :thumb:

.

A super-fast swap would be really interesting, and I'd like to meet the person that pulled it off by having the exact same tire as me :P

I'm 100% certain nobody rode my bike but me. I have the key on a lanyard around my neck at all times  :icon_mrgreen:

Sucks that I have to replace the tire, I have a date on Saturday and was wanting to pick her up on my bike. Phooey
