is it a good idea to use brake cleaner on the chain? I have seen what it does to non-metallic materials (o-rings come to mind) and I'm not sure I would be comfortable doing that on my bike.

Am I just making stuff up here? I know that the non-chlorinated stuff is supposed to be easier on non-metallic materials, but is it gentile enough for a chain?

My friend and I recently put together a list of  the 10 best things on Earth.  Brake cleaner was one of them (right between zip ties and sleeping in).

Someday I might learn how to read...

At least I know I'm not making stuff up (about brake kleen being bad for chains)

Actually a true Brake cleaner such as used for cleaning brake components is harmless to o-rings, seals and other such fragile poly wolly oomphas on yer bike. That's one of the main reasons it was "invented". It can be harmful to yer lungs tho'...so try not to get a "buzz" when using it. But you can experiment and put some o-rings in a cup and blast 'em with brake cleaner and put some other o-rings in a cup and blast 'em with kerosene or whatever...brake cleaner on o-rings is like powder to a bebe's butt :)

Don't use brake cleaner on your chain. It is designed to clean brakes.
It does damage the o-rings and desolves and removes the wax/grease packed inside the rollers.

Use WD-40, a toothbrush, and a couple of rags.

I use WD-40 to clean chain fling.  Works well.  I never tried brake clean, but I believe you that it works.

THey actually sell this stuff called "White Lightning" I learned about it From Mountain Biking. It's awesome for lubing Chains. It's wax based, so it deters dirt build-up. I use it on my bike and it works great.
