I didn't notice a burnt smell when I took off the head or the block. The only time I remember smelling a bad burnt smell from an engine was on a race car that had overheated the f$%* out of its engine. He got it hot enough to BURN mobil 1 full synthetic (might have been amsoil, I don't remember which). the guy knew it was overheating, too. He just kept going...

None of the bearings were chewed up bad. I just thought that I saw some magnet material embedded in the bearings. I believe the far right hand side main bearing was the worst. Here is a pic of one of them:


I already had the crank split, so I couldn't think of many reasons not to replace them while I was in there if there was a chance that I would have problems later. Chalk it up to paranoia, I guess.

The pic is bad I think... cos this one I thought looked almost normal, my cam bearings look sorta like this, well before the magnet incident... besides the magnet bits will be black ... this doen't seem to have too many black dots. Anyway I'll look at the right side now.

The damn rotor was soooooo hard to take off... and way, the crank as I can see from the holes in the cases... seems to have no magnetic material in it... The starter driven gear has tons of magnets in it though.
