Ok my freind and I both have 2004 gs500f's and are looking for exaust systems jet kits intakes what ever just want a little more power out of the gs.  Don't get me wrong the gs has some power but once you get out of third it loses the get up and go.   I dont like the hesitation the bike has climing from 75-85mph to pass a car.   What  quick cheep and easy upgrades can we look at to get a 10-25 horse power jump?  We are both new to the world of motorcycle mechanics and are kinda using the gs as a learning tool on how to both work on bikes and ride them.   Thanks       PITBULL

:?  10-25 hp  :?

some people like bob bruissard spend thousands of dollars into their GS and end up with about 60 or 70 hp

if you want like 5 hp then we can do something about that.....10 is pushing it....you will need to port the intake, exhaust.....full exhaust, jet kit and things like that

if you want more torque on the highway then swap the old 16 tooth sprocket for a 15.....it will have more power at high speeds

Get an SV 650.  It'll be cheaper then putting 20 HP into the GS.

what brand exaust and jet kit should I look at and where should I order it from.

I bought a Vance & Hines Supersport exhaust from BikeBandit for my '01.

I installed that with a K&N filter and revised jetting.

Bike has more power, especially at higher RPMs.

No idea how much horsepower was added, but considering the hp to weight ratio it doesn't take much hp to feel a difference. If your goal is to keep up with super sport bikes then the best mod is to buy a super sport bike.

I kept the stock gearing as I do a lot highway riding.

For the US market you have limited options on full exhaust systems. The European  market has more options but you will pay $$ to get those over here and I don't know what the additional benefit would be.

Good luck.

Well I hate to say this but it will be hard to gain 25 horspower on any bike without shelling uout some major bucks. The most you can get with still being under $1000 is probably 5hp. Go for torque, our bike has enough hp so just go for torque. Go down one tooth in the front, or two teeth if you wish. Hp is for speed and torque is what gets you up to that speed, incase you didn't know. It will be hard to top 110mph on our little GS's. So go for torque to see how fast you can get up to that speed. Good luck.

Buy a new bike.  There ain't much you can do to your GS to help improve its power.  You can spend TONS of money, and only come up with a FEW extra ponies.  If you want to go faster, buy a bigger bike.  :)  Until that day, you're stuck with 100 MPH.  BTW, is that not fast enough?   :dunno:

10hp gain for the GS is not that unrealistic. Timing advance, full exhaust, air filter, jetting, high lift cams & bored w/ larger high compression pistons will easily achieve this. Add a milled head and gain a little more. There are other little things that will add some...like necking the valves, polishing the exhaust ports & clean up the cast lines in the intake ports.

I have not had mine on a dyno but guessing in the 50hp range. My milled head has a bad valve seat so I had to switch back to a stock head. Less than $500 in the top end. Bought or traded for most of the used parts. It would not matter what bike I have, since I could not leave it in stock form.
Common sense in not very common.

I think the switch to a 15 tooth front sprocket would be the least expensive modification to obtain the highway acceleration you're looking for. At least before you really start pouring money into it on a pipe and all.

Weight loss is a good way to increase effective horsepower. In other words get the power to weight ratio up by decreasing the weight. If you weigh too much you can go on a diet :)  Get rid of everything on the bike not absolutely necessary for riding and modify those things that you can. Hey, get rid of 30-40 pounds and you'll see a big difference all around. Shoot I love the little thing, I don't care If It screams or not, and I love this forum too, whether y'all scream or not.

Hi-T

For about 600 in after market parts, you can really change the GS-  I have a full system V&H, rejet with pod filters, advancer mod, 15t sprocket, radial tires, kat shock, progressive springs, Coerce handlebars... I bought most of the parts over the winter as most people don't think about riding and the deals are better.

Anyways- the bike is much different.  I can easily play between 60-95 mph.  Just gotta keep the revs up.  Even with the 15t sprocket I can cruise at 85 mph with 7000 rpms.  And you wouldn't believe the differnce in handling with the upped suspension.  I ride an '01.

Do you know if i can get clipon handle bars for the gs and if so where would i find them at ?   thanks for all the help guys.  Im looking into the v&h exaust and a jet kit with the K&N filter for starters adn some cosmetic stuff I want to mout the tach and spedo in the faring and some clipon handlebars if i can fins some the tubes are comfortable but i want a little differnt look than everybody else that walks out the door with one of these cheeper bikes.  The suzuki shop has already sold 4 in my small town.  So far I love the gs just needed some more get up and go at 65-70 range hate having people tail gate me.    Thanks for the advise.
