What size bolt for the oil cover?

Hey guys,

I was changing my oil for the first time, and everything's going pretty okay (spilled a bit on the concrete driveway  :x ) and guess what happened when I was tightening the cover on the oil filter?

yep. bolt snapped right off. :x  :x

so I freaked out.

then I checked here, and discovered that it happens, phew. so I'm pretty sure I'll only be out a couple quarts of oil, but here's the question. what size bolt do I use to replace it? and also, I put oil in it thinking I'd need to take it somewhere to get it repaired (before I checked here  :x ) and started it up to see if it was rideable to a repair shop. I looked underneath and I can see what looks like the oil bubbling out but not really dripping. I think this'll be okay for the mile or two i'd need to go, but I'm not sure. Worst case scenario, is the bike rideable at all in case I need to take it to someone to help me get the bolt out?

Frustrated,

Riz

oh yeah, and how long should the bolt be?

Check out this BikeBandit page.

Item #11 is the "stud bolt" you need to replace.  According to the part number/price list, the stock part is something like 6mm x 20mm.

As far as getting the old stud out, either grab onto it with some locking pliers (if enough is protruding) or buy/borrow an EZ Out-type drill bit.  (Something like THIS or THIS.)

If you feel like you NEED to take it somewhere to have it done, yes, it should certainly last a mile or two if the other two nuts are snugged down.

Hope this helps!
