Strater clutch clunk = rotor magnet breaking...

OK That the conclusion I am making... those many months od that clunking noises the starter clutch used to make... made the magnet disintegrate ... the vibrations etc... We were tapping on the shell with a mallet to be able to remove it form the crank... and what a damn pain it was... ended up having to weld the bolt in the thing and used a sliding hammer to get it off finally... but that tapping we made caused the magnet to fall apart...
Cool.

You know all you have to do is thread a 20mm bolt (or a rear axle if you want to risk it) into the flywheel and it will pop it off...

The starter clutch might have caused the magnets to come off. But thats just a symptom of the problem.  You still have to find why its "clunking".
I would bet worn out or missing/broken centrigual clutch parts.

Starter clutch was bad, yes make clunk noises at startup... I am just saying to people... many people have that clunk at start up once in a while... that will make a more serious problem later. Starter clutch isn't centrifugal on a GS... its sprag type drive whatever the hell that is.
Cool.

yes, which is actuated by the centrigual force of the crank spinning round and round.

Sorry about your bike. If you need a new flywheel, I think I have one.

The damn rotor is also made of very soft metal, I chewed the threads off trying to remove it... the thing was on there good on my bike, I would like one yes, cos no one has the starter clutch available, and if yours is good, I'll take the rotor, started clutch and the gear that meshes with starter...  I was trying to buy from someone a few months ago, but they gave up trying to yank it off the crank, I now believe I have the stuff to do it. Rear axle of a GS is the wrong size, front axle is better I think.
Cool.

actually, I have a starter clutch sitting in my garage. It needs cleaning and its missing at least one of its springs, but appears to be fine otherwise.

Let me know if you want it.

I hope to find a new set of springs pins and rollers, I also want to get a good or new gear, and have to get a magnet. You have the housing and springs and pins and rollers, minus 1 spring?? Shall I tell you in a day or so... dont want to deprive everyone else of parts ... want to get 1 good set and be happy, put new parts in the wearing spots if not too $$$ and have it good.
Cool.

I am pretty sure that I have the rollers, pins and springs (minus one). The housing appears to be in good condition aside from some surface rust.  I also have a starter gear that is in similar condition (good, but has surface rust). They came with the rotor that I got from blueknyt. My starter clutch and gear just needed a cleaning to get all the magnet crap off so I just reused them.

I'll look at it more closely and post some pics soon.

Cool.

here's an idea...
why don't you take the parts off of yuor spare engine
ya know the one, with low miles, that you won't use

why not use it for parts.....

you already paid for the parts....

OK I took pictures of the starter clutch and gear. I do have all the pins, I just dropped one of them right before I took the picture and I don't have the time to search for the stupid thing right now.

1 spring is missing. The clutch looks fine to me, but the starter gear bearing looks a little dry. They all need some cleaning. I left the images at full res so you can see details and I didn't want to put uninterested parties through the 1800x1600 images. I made a simple page here

How does $20 + shipping sound?

I am yanking it off the low mile motor... when I find the damn axle... I destroyed one axle welding it to my rotor... Anyway I would like to buy one in case that motor needed to go in something...
Cool.

Hey goat... the starter clutch I have on order - that was a well worn part with 45K miles, and its well worth the $22 it cost me, the gear I would like, but mine is OK, my starter clutch housing is fine as well, The part I really need (and I am diving into that parts motor for is the Magnet). Your magnet went the same way, so I am thinking you dont have a magnet to spare either... I will have to see if I can get a magnet from someone, or get the parts off my spare motor.
Cool.
