How hard to install bandit400 rear?

Ok guys, here's my plan!

I want to install 160/60s on the back of the gs, with stock wheel up front and run radials.

Question/Instructions:

How hard is it to install the b4 rear wheel?

What parts do i need??? I think caliper bracket, and brake torque arM? This correct? If so, what years/models?

I know that the GSXR is a simplier swap, but i was just wondering how hard it'd be to do the b4 wheel instead.

Thanks guys for all the help.

I swapped for a GSXR. From what I know, it is about the same procedure. When I did mine I needed new bearings, a new custom bearing spacer for the smaller diameter axel and to mod the caliper bracket. I installed a 150/60 perellie diablo. Currently I have about 7-9mm clearence from tire to the chain. I could probably get by with a 160 tire but I got a 150 on and figured I don't need the extra width that a 160 would give.

Good Luck!

Did you have to do something with the brake torque arm... that steel piece that holds the upper part of the caliper that's about 1.5' long? It looks like i have only about 5mm's of space right now with 140s. Wouldn't work with 160s, AT ALL.

Are you sure all you did was cut the brake stay arm bracket-thingie with a different spacer?

I did nothing to my brake stay arm. It is very possible that the previous owner bent it out to fit the 140/80 that was on the bike when I got it. Either way it isn't that hard to bend after you get the new rim and wheel on. The hardest part was cuting the caliper bracket. You want to get the outside surface and the "cut down" surface as close to parallel as possible. I put it in a vice and used a hack-saw. It turned out pretty well, then I cleaned it up a bit with a file. I also had to take about 1mm of material off where the caliper bolts to the bracket. I did this to get my caliper aligned better with the new wheel.

As far as the bearing spacer I used a length of 1/2" schedual 80 steel pipe then I had it machined to a length and ID. Sorry I can't remember the dimentions anymore.

The setup on my bike is same as a stock bike I just have a different spacer and bracket, and of couse rim.

One more thing. I am using a brake disc from a Katahna it has a larger OD then the gsxr. The diameter is much closer to that of the GS. You will also need to buy another bolt to hold that disc on. The GS only has four and the new rim will require five.

What year of katana for the rotor? I think i am just going to go with the gsxr rear, katana rotor, gsxr brake arm and shim the sprocket out. Any idea how to shim the sprocket??? It looks like 4 bolts hold the sprocket on. If i put washers b/w the sprocket and wheel... that might work. But i'm not sure how much i'd have to do that. How would you do it? thanks for the help!

That wasnt necessary. You can use the gsxr bearing spacer. Its bigger than the gs axle by 3mm but its main purpose is to keep the bearings from moving, not holding the axle in place. Check my site for the how-to done by Werase643.

yeah it took me longer to type up the instructions than it took to do the conversion with a hacksaw

Well then, i'm just going to go that route. I want to run 160s on the bike, what year gsxr brake arm do i need? I don't really have the means to bend out the brake arm good enough to line everything up... so i'd rather go this route.

Thanks for the help guys!

Pantablo is right, you do not need to make a bearing spacer. I had a guy at work make one for nothing. Thats the only reason I had it done.

As far as what year disc. I can't remember for sure anymore but I want to say 90-93 something like that. It is really making me mad that I can't remember! I will try to take a pic of it tonight and see if i can match it to some on ebay. Wait actually I am going to a Brewers game tonight so maybe Thursday night.

Hm, just to confirm... this is a GSXR rear with a katana rotor? Or a B400 rear with katana rotor? I'd love pics... that'd be pretty damn awesome of you. If you can, please send them to my email: mercdudecbr600@yahoo.com thanks!

I've got a 150 Sportec M1 on a B400 rear and it clears the stock brake stay by about 5-6mm.  The Sportec runs a bit narrow mounted, though... about 142mm, IIRC.

Ok, thanks for the input, but i'm looking to install a 160 rear. I figure that the gsxr rear is the easiest way of doing this, so that's the way i'm going to go. I don't want to make spacers, AT ALL. I figure just getting the GSXR brake stay arm+cutting the rear caliper+shimming out the sprocket will be enough of a project for me. if it ACTUALLY works, i'll be damn surprised and i'll have to gloat to this forum.    if it doesn't work, then i'll be posting HELP ME all over the place.
